I held a 36-month postdoctoral position at the Anthropology Department at the University of Sao Paulo (USP), where I designed and taught postgraduate courses, and conducted research on the production of images and memories, focusing on monuments and memorials to the dead. I also held a 12-month postdoctoral position at Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), in Paris. I was granted a four-year postdoctoral fellowship by the Sao Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) — arguably the most competitive postdoctoral program in Brazil. At USP, I am a member of GRAVI — Visual Anthropology Research Group. I was awarded the 2016 edition of the prestigious CAPES Prize for the best PhD thesis defended in Brazil in 2015 in the areas of Arts and Music, with a dissertation entitled “The body, the death, the image: the invention of a presence in memorial and post-mortem photographs”. I hold a PhD (2015) in Arts from the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil), with a four-month research stay (2014) at the Faculté des Sciences Sociales of the Université de Strasbourg (France). I also hold a B.A. in Arts (2003) and an M.A. in Visual Arts (2006). I designed and taught two courses for master and PhD students at USP’s Anthropology Department: “The body, the death, the image” (2017); and “The body, the blank, the trace: memory, representation, presence and absence of the dead in collective spaces” (2019). I am presently the co-supervisor of a doctoral research (Paula Huven; “Image beings, being of images”) at the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, and I was also the co-supervisor of a successfully completed PhD (Giovanna Martins; “Cloudy bodies: images between appearance and disappearance”), at the same institution (2019). I participated as external examiner of various other examinations of master’s and doctoral works. I was a keynote speaker at the XXXVII Colloquium of the Brazilian Art History Committee, which took place at the Federal University of Bahia. I also delivered a number of talks on my ongoing research at academic events in Brazil and Portugal. I published, among others, an article in ‘Modos’ (Qualis CAPES A1), and one in ‘Pós: Journal of the Graduate Program in Arts of the School of Fine Arts of UFMG’ (Qualis CAPES A2). I was Visiting Scholar at the Dipartimento di Scienze Politiche e Sociali, Università di Bologna, in Italy (2016), and at the European Observatory on Memories, Universitat de Barcelona, Spain (2019). In 2020, I completed the production of a website containing photographs of monuments and memorials to the dead that I produced over the years during several field work. I specialize in the areas of image, art and photography, with focus on theory and criticism of image, especially from an anthropological perspective. As a PhD student, I conducted extensive research on memorial and post-mortem photographs, images produced in the context of mourning, along with several studies on death and the representation of the dead. I have been studying, for some years, the presence and impact of memorial elements in culture, such as museums, cemeteries, monuments, ephemeral altars, places of conscience and memory.
