Luisa Alejandra Helguero

Luisa Helguero (LH) is a distinguished researcher in breast cancer biology with an extensive background in Cellular & Molecular Biology. She earned her PhD from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) —with an outstanding thesis—and a Licentiate degree in Biological Sciences from UBA. Early in her career, LH was mentored by renowned scientists such as Dr. A. Molinolo, Dr. C. Lanari, and the late Shyamala Gopalan Harris at UC Berkeley. Her doctoral research revealed a relevant association between progesterone receptor isoforms and endocrine treatment, laying the foundation for her future work in endocrine-related cancer. Between 2003 and 2009, LH advanced her expertise as a postdoctoral researcher in Jan-Ake Gustafsson’s lab at the Karolinska Institute, where she focused on deciphering the role of estrogen receptor beta in breast cancer—a protein first uncovered by Gustafsson a few years earlier. Her contributions during this period were recognized with the prestigious David and Astrid Hagelén fellowship. In 2009, she joined the Mass Spectrometry Centre at UAVR as an Assistant Researcher, where she established her scientific independence by leading projects in wide-screen proteomics and lipidomics, earning competitive funding and an award from the Portuguese Oncology Society for her work in breast cancer research. In 2015, LH became an Invited Assistant Professor at the Department of Medical Sciences, UAVR. Her permanent appointment as Assistant Professor in 2017 marked a new phase in her career. Today, as the leader of the Hormones & Cancer Lab at IBIMED UAVR, she investigates the interplay between metabolic rewiring, immunity, and proteostasis in breast cancer. LH’s innovative contributions extend beyond fundamental research. Her work has uncovered novel mechanisms involving estrogen receptor beta and progesterone receptor isoforms, pioneered studies on non-canonical histones and lipidomics in cancer, and revealed how protein aggregation and metabolic adaptations influence therapy resistance. LH has coordinated nine competitive research projects, participated in multiple international collaborations, and supervised numerous PhD, MSc, and postdoctoral researchers. Her prolific output includes ~90 SCI journal articles, key contributions in top-tier journals, and participation in clinical trials and scientific review panels. A recognized leader in her field, LH is a member of several professional associations—including ASPIC, EACR, and the Endocrine Society UK—and serves as an ambassador for ASPIC.
