Martin received his degree in Physics (with a specialization in Optoelectronics) by the University of Santiago de Compostela in 2003. In 2006 he joined the Material Science Institute of Madrid (ICMM-CSIC) to pursue a PhD hybrid photonic-plasmonic self-assembled photonic crystals which he obtained in 2011. In 2012 he joined the Photonics Group of the University of Bristol (UK) to work on the development of photonic devices for quantum information technologies. Simultaneously he started an investigation of photosynthetic photonic structures at the University of Bristol. Martin Lopez joined the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratoyr - INL in Braga (portugal) in May 2017 were he funded the “Natural and Artificial Photonic Structures and Devices” Research Group. In 2024 he joined the Optics Institute of the Spanish National Research Council and funded the Biotic Photonics Laboratory were he investigates natural photonic systems on the premise that by seeking inspiration in nature we can learn both design and fabrication methodologies for cost-effective photonic devices.
