M. Fatima Araujo is a Principal Investigator at the Centre for Nuclear Sciences and Technologies (C2TN), Department of Nuclear Sciences and Engineering, Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. She obtained a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1977 by Instituto Superior Técnico and completed the PhD in Sciences, specialized in Instrumental Analytical Techniques, in 1989, at the Universiteit Antwerpen, Belgium. After the PhD, she initiated her research activities at the Institute of Nuclear Sciences and Engineering (ICEN), with the installation of the EDXRF laboratory and applying her expertise in the fields of the Environmental Geochemistry. At the earlier 2000´s, following up the massive national increment in archaeological excavations, and the relevance of the instrumental analytical techniques, she started investigation in archaeological metallic artefacts. Since 1990, she coordinated and/or participated in about 25 financed projects (e.g. Portuguese Science Foundation, European Community and International Atomic Energy Agency) in the areas of Environment and Earth Sciences, Marine Sciences and Technologies and History and Archaeology. Among these, some major projects were run under her coordination: between 2001 and 2005, the PLE/8/00 ¿Consequences of River Discharge Modifications on Coastal Zone and Continental Shelf (CRIDA)¿, in the framework of the State Laboratories Reform Support Program, with a budget of 625 000 ¿; between 2005 and 2008 she was the responsible for the setting up of the ¿Center for Isotope and Trace Element Research (CISTER)¿ composed by Clean rooms, infrastructures (Ultrapure water, hots, etc..) and the installation of the ICP-MS coupled with a HPLC, under a project financed by the National Program for Scientific Equipment Renewal (REEQ/618/CTE/2005 ¿ 184 000 ¿ budget). Between 2010 and 2013 she was the PI of the project ¿Ancient Metallurgy of the Portuguese Territory (EarlyMetal)¿ resulting from the integration of 3 approved projects (PTDC/HIS-ARQ/110442/2008 ¿ 304 000 ¿). Published more than 120 articles in scientific journals listed in the Web of Science, about 60 in national journals and more than 20 book chapters. She has been regularly participating in PhD programs and MSc courses. She was the adviser of 10 Post Doctoral fellows and successfully supervised 7 PhD thesis, 9 MSc thesis and 16 graduation students in the fields of Conservation Sciences, Environment, Chemistry, Geology and Marine Resources.
