Marta Carvalho is Principal Investigator of the project "DentalBioMatrix - Exploiting the power of decellularized extracellular matrix to fabricate hierarchical biomimetic scaffolds to regenerate functional periodontal tissues" (PTDC/BTM-MAT/3538/2020, Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia, FCT). She completed her PhD in Bioengineering in December 2018 at Instituto Superior Técnico (University of Lisbon) with collaboration with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI/USA), followed by a post-doc project in Stem Cell Engineering Research Group (SCERG)/Institute of Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB) in collaboration with Bionet. She has a Master Degree in Biomedical Engineering and was a visiting scholar at Politecnico di Milano (Italy). Marta also gained industry experience by working at Cell2B as a scientist on the scope of development cell therapies for graft-versus-host disease, acquiring skills in R&D, quality control, project management and GMP. Currently, she is a research associate at iBB and has been working in a multidisciplinary project involving different areas such as Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine, Cell Biology and Biomaterials. Her PhD project was developed at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute under the supervision of Prof. Deepak Vashishth (RPI) and Prof. Cláudia Lobato da Silva (SCERG), focusing on developing biomimetic 3-D matrices for bone tissue engineering, by exploiting the properties of extracellular matrix. She has 16 publications in top-referred international journals, 1 patent, 2 book chapters and 35 conference communications. Marta has participated as lecturer in some courses and was assistant lab supervisor and mentor of MSc and undergraduate students. She has participated in several international conferences in the field and her work has been recognized by the scientific committee, resulting in a student scientist award and a poster presentation prize. She has been invited to review several papers for international journals in the field and has acted as principal examiner in MSc theses (>10). She is actively involved in supervision activities of MSc and BSc students. Recently, Marta led a team of engineers and clinicians in an accelerator program (Lab2Market, Everis), where she received specialized training in business model and go-to-market strategies and pitched her technology to investors and potential customers. Marta has been collaborating with PreScouter as a medical writer to create a shared vision of how science research profits all of us. Currently, her main research interests are focused in the development of anti-aging bioengineering strategies to regenerate tissues by exploiting the power of decellularized extracellular matrix.
