Inês G. Mollet is a researcher in molecular mechanisms of metabolic and cardiovascular disease, with a degree in Biological Engineering (Université Libre de Bruxelles and Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon) and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from Instituto de Medicina Molecular with Prof. Carmo-Fonseca (Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa, IMM/FMUL) funded by Muscular Dystrophy Association "Profiling alternative splicing in muscular dystrophies" - MDA3662 (2005-2007) and European Alternative Splicing Network of Excellence (2007-2009 EURASNET). Developed during PhD one of the first alternative splicing databases ExonMine to investigate mechanisms of alternative splicing in disease context and published 3 articles. After PhD, worked at Imperial College London (National Heart & Lung Institute, UK) as Research Associate with Dr. Shovlin, maintaining collaborations on gene loci associated with hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia using high throughput sequencing publishing 3 articles. During 2010-2016 worked at Lund University Diabetes Centre (Sweden) as Postdoctoral Fellow and Assistant Researcher with Prof. Lena Eliasson (Islet Cell Exocytosis Unit) and Prof. Marju Orho-Melander (Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease - Genetic Epidemiology Unit), deciphering islet pathophysiology in both rodent models of diabetes and human islets of Langerhans with bioinformatic, wet lab and microscopy involving 17 publications. Collaborated with Dr. Isabel Gonçalves on omics data analysis of human carotid plaques linked to cerebrovascular events that identified tissue and metabolic biomarkers of atherosclerotic plaque vulnerability (5 publications). In 2017 joined NOVA Medical School Research (Lisbon, Portugal) working with Prof. Paula Macedo on effects of plasma exosome derived microRNAs in Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) (1 publication 2021), and with Prof. Helena Vieira on remote ischemic conditioning and plasma proteomics of stroke patients (4 publications). Began independent research in 2017: presented preliminary in-silico analyses, that supported neural involvement in early diabetes aetiology, at the British Society for Neuroendocrinology Gut-brain axis Symposium in Sep 2017 (UK) and was awarded seed funding Project Support Grant (BSN-PSG-2017) to study "Nervous system signalling in the diabetic gut - Links between disrupted nutrient sensing and GABAergic signals". In 2019 set up a Clinical Observational Study (REMIDIA) as principal investigator with surgical team at Digestive Pathology Clinic of Instituto Português de Oncologia FG (IPO-Porto) and NOVA Medical School to investigate novel diabetic targets in human gut biopsies. Since 2021, coordinates proteomics analysis of gut biopsies from bariatric surgery patients in the RESTART Clinical Study coordinated by Prof. Cláudia Marques (FCM|NMS/CINTESIS). In 2021 joined Disease Pathways and Biomarkers research at UCIBIO Applied Molecular Bioscience Unit at FCT-NOVA (Caparica, Portugal) as Senior Researcher. Was awarded funding from Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (DUOBETES - EXPL/MED-PAT/0852/2021) to screen for new high potential therapeutic targets in duodenum against type 2 diabetes". Has supervised 2 Master Theses and taught in curricular units of Masters in Biomedicine (Lund Univ.), PhD Program (NOVA Medical School, Lisbon) and Masters in Biochemistry (FCT-NOVA, Lisbon). In 2023 was awarded six-year individual position funding from Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (2022.03258.CEECIND). Currently researches aetiology of diabetes by investigating early changes in transcriptional and proteomic profiles in the gut of diabetic patients experiencing diabetes remission after metabolic surgery as well as dietary bioactive compounds with therapeutic potential.
