Dr. Filipa A. Vicente (female) obtained her BSc, MSc and doctoral degrees in Biochemistry (2012), Clinical Biochemistry (2014) and Chemical Engineering (2019), respectively, at the University of Aveiro (UA). During her BSc project she started working with the development of sustainable extraction/purification platforms of bioactive compounds, which she continued during her 1st year of MSc as a volunteer at PaTh, CICECO, UA. For her MSc thesis, she had the pleasure of working under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Adalberto Pessoa Jr, a recognized international researcher, at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of São Paulo, Brazil. Here, she gathered a vast knowledge on these sustainable platforms using different solvents and applied them for distinct type of biomolecules. During her PhD, she worked with the characterization and implementation of a sustainable and integrated platform, namely aqueous micellar two-phase systems with surface active ionic liquids as co-surfactants, for the purification of distinct compounds directly from their biomass. This led her to spend 3 months (October - December 2015) of her PhD working with Prof. Dra. Polona Žnidaršic-Plazl at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Herein, she learned how to enhance the potential of these technologies by applying them in a continuous process with the aid of microfluidics. Currently, she is a Research Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Chemistry in Slovenia (since 2019), where she is further deepening her knowledge in greener technologies for the Biorefinery of crustacean waste. Since she began her research activities, she has published 21 articles in international peer reviewed journals, for instance Green Chem., ACS Sustain. Chem. Eng., Carbohydr. Polym. and Sep. Purif. Technol, with 2 more articles in final revision (one in Chem. Eng. J.). Herein, she was the 1st author in 11 articles, being two of them the front cover of Green Chem. (DOI:10.1039/c9gc00104b and DOI:10.1039/c9gc04362d), and the corresponding author in 5 articles. Filipa is also the 1st and corresponding author of a book chapter under publication. She just got approved a project under the Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus from the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology. Additionally, she has been a team member in 3 Portuguese, 5 Slovenian, 1 Brazilian and 1 Horizon Projects. Filipa has also attended several international conferences to promote her work, accounting with 15 oral presentations and 23 posters. Furthermore, she has participated as a trainer in the ILWS2017 Winter School on Ionic Liquids held at the University of Porto and UA, and collaborated in the dissemination of the scientific work carried out in the Department of Chemistry (UA) to the non-scientific community at TechDays 2017 and UA Open Campus 2017 and 2018 events. She is currently the co-guest editor for the special issue "Biopolymers Pathway from Biomass to Plastic-Free Living" of the journal Polymers (ISSN 2073-4360), the special issue “From Sustainable Biorefinery Platforms to Green Catalytic Transformations” of the journal Frontiers in Chemical Engineering (ISSN 2673-2718), and the special issue "Application of Ionic Liquids in Separation Science" of the journal Separations (ISSN 2297-8739). Filipa is also a Review Editor on the Editorial Board of Green and Sustainable Chemistry (specialty section of Frontiers in Chemistry and Frontiers in Environmental Science) and is on the Reviewer board of Polymers journal.
