Pedro Morais has a University degree in Marine Biology and Fisheries (2000) and a Ph.D. in Population Ecology (2008), both completed at the University of Algarve (Portugal). He was a post-doc researcher at CIIMAR (2008-2014, University of Porto, Portugal), CIMA (2013-2014, University of Algarve, Portugal), and at the Institute of Vertebrate Biology (2014-2015, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic). Between 2017 and 2019, Pedro was an Assistant Specialist at the leading public university in the world, the University of California, Berkeley. Currently, he is a research consultant. Pedro studied almost all water ecosystems of temperate regions- coastal lagoons, estuaries, rivers, streams, oxbow lakes and even the oceanic realm during four oceanographic cruises. Thus, Pedro has a holistic perspective of aquatic ecosystems, which is reflected by the multiple topics that he studied since 1997, still as an undergraduate student. However, Pedro has a broad interest in estuarine ecology, and a particular interest in fish migration and biological invasions. Regarding fish migration, his goals are to unravel the patterns and processes that explain fish life history plasticity, while his interests on biological invasions focus on studying the effects of aquatic biological invasions on ecosystem functioning. Pedro is an independent and pro-active researcher, and he has been involved in all domains of Science, namely: 1) research, 2) editorial (book editor, journal’s invited-editor, reviewer), 3) management, 4) teaching, 5) supervision of students, 6) organization of scientific events (courses, conferences), 7) outreach. Pedro published 46 papers in international peer review journals, of which 21 papers as a 1st author. Pedro also published 7 book chapters, of which three are published in a book that he edited for CRC Press – An introduction to fish migration. These papers and chapters were published in collaboration with scientists from Europe (France, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain), North America (Canada, USA), Africa (Tunisia), Oceania (Australia) and South America (Brazil). Pedro was the co-PI of a project funded by FCT (Portugal) which was largely based on his post-doc work. Pedro edited a special issue in the journal “Biological Invasions” (IF- 3.474, 2010) in 2011, where 15 papers were published. He edited all papers, and revised and co-revised 22 and 9 papers, respectively, of the 45 papers that were submitted. He is now editing two special issues, one for Oceans (MDPI) entitled “Fish larval biology and ecology”, and another for “Frontiers for Young Minds” entitled “Where the river meets the ocean: stories from the San Francisco Estuary”. Pedro also edited the book “An Introduction to Fish Migrations” (CRC Press) together with Dr. Françoise Daverat (IRSTEA, France). Pedro is now editing the book “Otolith chemistry: a window on the lives of fish” (Springer-Nature). Pedro was the leading editor of both books. Pedro has revised papers for 30 journals. He is also an Associate-Editor for Frontiers for Young Minds being responsible for handling 10 papers, so far. In total, Pedro has contributed to the editorial work of 100 submissions to scientific journals. Pedro was appointed as CIMA’s scientific secretary in 2013, soon after his arrival to CIMA to conduct his post-doc research at the University of Algarve. As part of his duties, Pedro coordinated several outreach activities to the general public, to scientists and students. He also cooperated with CIMA’s director and research-nodes’ leaders during the preparation of CIMA’s application to a new 5-year national funding scheme. He resigned this appointment in September 2014, after leaving to the Czech Republic to assume a new post-doc position at the Institute of Vertebrate Biology (Czech Republic). Pedro was hired as an invited assistant teacher by the University of Algarve in 2002 to replace two professors on a maternal leave to teach the laborat
