Carlos Cordeiro, Associate Professor of Biochemistry at Faculty of Sciences, Lisbon University, holds a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Lisbon (1996) and a Habilitation in Structural Biochemistry from the same University (2018). Leads the Fourier-Transform Ion-Cyclotron Resonance and Structural Mass Spectrometry Laboratory, a node of the Portuguese Research site of Instruct-ERIC, the World leading European Research Infrastructure on Structural Biology and a member of the n Network of Fourier-Transform Ion-Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry Centres (INFRAIA H2020, proj. 731077). With over 20 years of experience in mass spectrometry, introduced FT-ICR-MS in Portugal (2006) and focused his research on developing this extreme resolution MS technique to solve biological problems. From top-down proteomics and amyloid diseases to native mass spectrometry and metabolomics as a tool for molecular characterization and fingerprinting life. Fosters the development of computation tools based on machine learning to interpret MS spectral information in a biological context. Presently developing methods for on-shot high throughput metabolomic methods and classification of microorganisms based on metabolomic information. He is also developing MS based fragment screen in the framework of the European project “Fragment-Screen: Fragment-based drug discovery through structural biology, medicinal chemistry, and artificial intelligence (Grant Agreement Number 101094131). He coordinates the Portuguese Mass Spectrometry Network, a National Roadmap Research Infrastructure of Strategical interest and has a seat in the Council of Instruct-ERIC. Lead and participated in over 21 projects, published 98 research articles and supervised and co-supervised over twenty thesis (MsC and PhD). Supervised over five post-doctoral researchers. During the COVID-19 pandemic led the Portuguese MS community in the Mass Spectrometry Coalition Against COVID-19 that comprises over 800 scientists worldwide.
