Ângela Amaro-Leal, PhD, biomedical scientist, joined, in 2011, the Cardiovascular Autonomic Function Lab of the Cardiovascular Center of the University of Lisbon (CCUL), Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon (FMUL). During these ten years, she developed skills in animal experimentation and acquired experience in animal behaviour and cardiology/autonomic nervous system. Between 2011 and 2014, she completed a master's degree in Neuroscience (FMUL), where she implemented a cognitive training program in an animal model of preventing cognitive decline. In 2013, she was awarded with FCT funding to develop a project that aimed at implementing a cognitive training program in an animal model of temporal lobe epilepsy. Between September 2017 and 2020, she enrolled the Doctoral Program of the Lisbon Medical Center (CAML) and under the supervision of Prof Helder Mota Filipe from the Faculty of Pharmacy of Lisbon University she studied in an animal model of multiple organ dysfunction the pharmacological strategies to overcome the hyperinflammation that characterizes the early stages of bacterial sepsis. In the scope of this new work has developed practical skills of surgery and microsurgery, anaesthesia techniques, in vivo evaluation of the autonomic nervous system as well as behavioural and cognition function, techniques of histology, immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR as well as applied signal processing techniques to physiological and behavioural analysis. As team member, she participated in 12 projects, including the ¿Tracking3C project - Tracking early Cardiotoxicity developed during Chemotherapy in breast Cancer¿ funded by FCT and in the H2020 project ¿NEurobehavioural predictiVE and peRsonalised Modelling of depressIve symptoms duriNg primary somatic Diseases with ICT- enabled self-management procedures¿. She has also authored various scientific publications with peer review and provided practical laboratory support and training to undergraduate and postgraduate national and international medical students. Currently, she is also Assistant Professor at Egas Moniz Higher School of Health (ESSEM), and she continues to develop her scientific interests on multiorganic alterations of inflammation, autonomic cardiovascular control and mechanisms of memory regulation and animal learning.
