My research is mainly in marine biology & ecology, particularly on cetaceans and cephalopods, and impacts of anthropogenic stressors at individual and population scales, with applications in sustainable use of living marine resources, marine conservation and food safety. Recent research includes monitoring, assessment and mitigation of cetcean bycatch; statistical modelling of life history parameters, distribution and abundance in relation to environmental variation; prediction of climate change effects; risk assessment for foodborne hazards such as anisakiasis; assessment, management and governance options for cephalopod fiseries, and implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. *** I have 298 scientific papers published or accepted in peer-reviewed journals (276 peer-reviewed papers in SCI journals, 9 peer-reviewed papers in non-SCI journals, 11 forewords or prefaces to special issues of SCI journals, 2 others). Over 170 other publications. Approx. 9200 non-self-citations and H-Index = 55 (Web of Knowledge all databases, 01/02/22); ~18300 citations, H-Index = 75, I-10 index = 271 (Google Scholar, 20/01/22); RG score = 45.45 (Research Gate, 20/01/22). *** I have co-edited or co-authored 7 books (with ISSN), presented or contributed to 470+ conference talks and posters. *** I am/have been co-ordinator of 8 EU-funded collaborative projects, including: CetAMBICion, ECOSUMMER (Marie Curie Training Site), CEPHSTOCK and BIOCET. *** I have participated in numerous EU collaborative projects since 1990, recently including: PARASITE (FP7) and Cephs & Chefs (ITERREG). *** I supervis or have supervised around 70 postgraduate research students (57 completed - 48 PhDs, 2 MPhils, 7 MSc by Research). *** I co-coordinated and taught on the University of Aberdeen's MSc degree programme in Marine and Fisheries Science for 11 years (1996-2007), plus teaching on several undergraduate marine and statistics courses. From 2010 to 2016, I was course co-ordinator for 3rd year Population Ecology. *** I worked at the University of Aberdeen for 31 years, as a research assistant, postdoctoral researcher and as member of the academic staff (1996-2016) - I was appointed Professor in 2008. *** During 2007-2010, I was Marie Curie Professor at the Instituto Español de Oceanográfia (IEO) in Vigo, Spain, and I was Professor Catedrático Convidado ("Cátedra do Mar") at University of Aveiro, Portugal (2012-2016, 50% time). *** I started work at Insituto de Investigaciones Marinas in 2017, becoming Head of the Department of Marine Ecology and Resources in September 2018. Under the Spanish system for evaluation of research activity, I have been awarded five sexenios and five quinquenios to date. *** I am a member of the British Ecological Society, Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, Society for Marine Mammalogy, European Cetacean Society, Fauna & Flora International, and Mammal Society of the British Isles.
