Luís O. Silva is Distinguished Professor and Professor of Physics at Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, Portugal, where he leads the Group for Lasers and Plasmas and is the School Council President. He is also a Visiting Professor in the Department of Physics of the University of Oxford. He obtained his degrees (MSc 1992, PhD 1997, Habilitation 2005) from IST. He was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of California Los Angeles from 1997 to 2001. His scientific contributions are focused on the in silico exploration of the interaction of intense beams of particles and lasers with plasmas, from a fundamental point of view and towards their applications for secondary sources for biology and medicine, combining theoretical physics with massively parallel numerical simulations. He has authored more than 250 papers in refereed journals, including 1 Nature, 6 Nature Physics, 4 Nature Communications, 1 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, 35 Physical Review Letters, 8 Astrophysical Journal Letters, 11 New Journal of Physics, > 15000 citations (h-index=70 Jan 24). He has given invited and plenary talks at all the major conferences and university departments in his field of research, including the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Lecture and the J. D. Lawson Lecture. Has served on the program and selection committees of conferences and prizes in Europe, US and Japan. He is on the editorial board of Journal of Plasma Phys (Cambridge Univ Press), is a member of the International Scientific Advisory Board of ELI Beamlines, served on the Research and Innovation Advisory Group of the EuroHPC, the EU Joint Undertaking for High Performance Computing, and the Scientific Steering Committee of the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE), and was a member of the National Council for Science and Technology (reporting to the Prime Minister of Portugal), He was a fellow of the Center for Fundamental Physics of RAL, was a member of the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, UC Santa Barbara in 2009, and regularly contributes to the activities of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (UNESCO), in Trieste. He has supervised 17 PhD students and 8 post-doctoral fellows whose work has led to several national and international prizes. He was PI in more than 20 projects funded by the Portuguese Science Foundation, ESA and EU, in EU and USA supercomputing projects (PI on several PRACE projects), by NVIDIA, and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. He co-leads, with Prof. Warren Mori at UCLA, the development of the state-of-the-art plasma simulation code OSIRIS now being used by more the 50 institutions worldwide. Luis O. Silva has chaired and organized international conferences in Laser-Plasma Accelerators, High Energy Density Physics, Laboratory Astrophysics, Extremely High Intensity Laser Physics, and Extreme Light Physics. Luis O. Silva was awarded two Advanced Grants by the European Research Council in 2010 and 2015, being one of the youngest scientists to be awarded two Advanced Grants. He was awarded the 2011 Scientific Prize of the Technical University of Lisbon, the IBM Scientific Prize 2003, the 2001 Abdus Salam ICTP Medal for Excellence in Nonlinear Plasma Physics by a Young Researcher, and the Gulbenkian Prize for Young Researchers in 1994. He was selected as Young Scientist 2009 by the World Economic Forum. elected Fellow of the American Physical Society and to the Global Young Academy in 2009, and Fellow of the European Physical Society in 2017. In 2019, was elected as Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences, and Socio Correspondente of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences (Physics Section). In 2016, Luis O.
