Alexis F. Viegas graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Languages, Literatures, and Cultures from the School of Arts and Humanities (FLUL), University of Lisbon, in 2019, achieving an average of 17/20. He has continued his studies at the same institution and completed his Master’s degree in Comparative Studies in 2023, with an average of 18/20. Supervised by Professor Simão Valente (ILCML-FLUP) and Professor José Pedro Serra (CEC-FLUL), his dissertation achieved an average score of 19/20. It explored the intersection of literary theory and videogame studies, focusing on Gérard Genette’s theory of analepsis to analyze flashback implementation in a videogame. He has also held various professional positions to support his studies and research. From 2022 to 2024, he served as a Publications Assistant at the Centre for Comparative Studies (CEComp-FLUL), where he was integral to the administrative management of publications, gaining firsthand exposure to editorial and investigative practices in several research fields (Comparative Literature, Digital Humanities, Intermedia Studies, etc.). This experience has been instrumental for the research he has conducted thus far. He has made several contributions in the field of Game Studies, particularly focusing on The Last of Us: Part II (2020). He has successfully transformed his MA research into an article scheduled for publication in 2024, at one of the most esteemed journals in the field. Moreover, he has given conference presentations on various aspects of the game—including Artaudian influences and elements from Greek Tragedy—at national and international events such as the “Games and Language” (org. Univ. of Debrecen) and the “Winter Doctoral Symposium” (org. NOVA Univ. of Lisbon) conferences. In 2024, he is scheduled to deliver two presentations: one on the ‘pleasures of videogame play’ (CEComp-FLUL), exploring its connection to Roland Barthes’ theory on the pleasure of the text; and another, on Artaud’s ‘plague as spectacle’ in post-apocalyptic videogames (CETAPS-NOVA). In the realm of film and literature, he has co-edited the book Nosferatu: 100 Anos de Terror (Edições Húmus, 2023), stemming from the homonymous event co-organized to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Murnau’s film, in 2022, at Cinema São Jorge. In 2023, he co-organized another event commemorating the 50th anniversary of J.R.R. Tolkien’s death, fostering a collaborative effort between different research centres within FLUL (History, Classical Studies, English Studies). Additionally, he has submitted an article to The Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts, exploring a comparative approach between German romantic notions of music and the fantastical in literature. Lastly, he has been invited to join the Scientific Initiation Conferences at FLUL as a supervisor in the fields of Literary, Film, and Game Studies, as well as speculative fiction. He is currently supervising a third year BA student on the production of an article titled “A Matter of Liminality: Unraveling the Uncanny in the Miniatures of Hereditary (Ari Aster, 2018).” Alongside his other responsibilities, he was a co-editor for estrema, a peer-reviewed post-graduate student journal at CEComp-FLUL, from 2021 to 2023. Since 2024, he has taken on the role of Editor-in-Chief for the journal.
