Juan Garrido-Maraver, PhD. Background: From 2004 up to 2009 I studied a degree in Biotechnology at Pablo de Olavide University in Seville. Before finishing my degree, I joined a research lab at the Andalusian Centre for Developmental Biology (CABD) where I became really interested in science and research. In 2010 I did a Master’s degree in rare diseases and in 2015 I finished my doctoral thesis titled “Differential pathophysiology in MELAS syndrome” where I studied mitochondrial biogenesis and mitophagy in primary fibroblasts derived from patients with mitochondrial diseases. Besides this, I worked in parallel in a Drosophila lab, where I studied the behaviour of microtubules during apoptosis in Drosophila melanogaster development. In 2016 I moved to the UK to work as a postdoctoral scientist for the University of Cambridge at the MRC Toxicology Unit located in Leicester (UK). There, I combined my expertise in mitochondria and Drosophila genetics to develop my investigation around a neurodegenerative disease such as Parkinson’s disease. In particular, my project focused on the interface between mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum and how this can affect stress signalling responses. Recently, in 2019 I joined the University of Algarve (Faro, Portugal) to work at CBMR (Centre for Biomedical Research) in Dr. Álvaro Tavares lab. My project is focused on the study of the molecular mechanisms of chromosomal segregation using Drosophila as model organism. Apart from my scientific career, I am also committed to teaching and the diffusion of science. I did a master´s degree in teaching, I gave classes in a High-level training course (CFGS) in Laboratory of clinical analysis, I participated in several editions of Science fair, and I am accredited by the Spanish agency for Assessment (ANECA) as a PhD assistant lecturer (PAD number: 2017-5057).
