Alexandre Miguel Prior Afonso. É Investigador no(a) Universidade do Porto Centro de Estudos de Fenómenos de Transporte. Afonso graduated in Chemical Engineering from Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) in 2000, with the final-year Research Project at Universidad Politecnica de Catalunya graded with an Honour Grade (10/10). In 2005 completed the Msc in Heat and Fluid mechanics and in 2010 completed the PhD degree in Biological and Chemical Engineering from FEUP. The dissertation thesis was awarded with the "Best PhD Thesis in Applied and Computational Mechanics 2010", awarded by APMTAC - Portuguese Association of Theoretical and Applied Computational Mechanics. It received an Honorable Mention in the "Iberian most distinguished award for the PhD Thesis in Rheology", awarded in 2010 by the Portuguese Society of Rheology and the Spanish Group of Rheology. In 2017 received the Younger Researcher Award in Applied and Computational Mechanics Prof. João Martins, awarded by APMTAC - Portuguese Association of Theoretical and Applied Computational Mechanics. In 2014/15 worked as Assistant Professor at the Master of Computational Mechanics at School of Engineering of the University of Porto. Currently, Afonso is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at FEUP, where it received diploma for pedagogical recognition in the the academic years of 2016/17 up to 2021/22. Afonso published +45 papers on international peer-reviewer journals, 2 dissertation thesis, 9 patents, 3 book chapters, edited 3 books and +60 publications in national and international conferences. Afonso supervised (or is currently supervising) 2 Post-Doc scholar, 4 PhD student, +12 MsC thesis on Mechanical and Chemical Engineering at FEUP and 4 fellowships from FCT projects. 3 international PhD students were supervised locally during their studies in Portugal. Afonso was granted with several grants in the competitive calls for projects from national (FCT) science foundations and projects from industry. These projects represented a solid step in the consolidation and development of independent work and was the starting point for the creation of a young and active research team. Afonso worked, in 2012/13, as R&D Engineering at Bosch, developing new components and products for water heaters systems especially for low NOx combustion burner and fuel/air mixing systems, and monitoring the industrialization of new products, including production of prototypes and zero-series. During this period, submitted several innovation reports, from which 9 patents were granted. Afonso patented a new heat exchanger for a water heater, three new air/gas mixture systems and one low NOx technology for combustion burners. Is a peer-reviewer of Microfluidics and Nanofluidics, Physic of fluids, Journals of non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics, Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics and Computers and Fluids.
