L.M. Vilhena holds a Chemical Engineering degree from the Technical University of Lisbon (Instituto Superior Técnico), Portugal, as well as a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, field of Tribology, from LTIN - Laboratory for Tribology and Interface Nanotechnology - University of Ljubljana, Slovenia (November 10, 2012). After two years as a researcher at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland, and one year at the Instituto Pedro Nunes - Association for Innovation and Development in Science and Technology (IPN) in Coimbra, Portugal, he worked as a Marie Curie Fellow (European Commission) in the European project "WEMESURF" (Characterisation of WEear MEchanisms and SURFace functionalities with regard to life time prediction and quality criteria - from micro to the nano range). From November 2010 to November 2011, he worked at the Centre for Research in Ceramics and Composite Materials, CICECO, University of Aveiro, Portugal, on the national project "New binders for the sintering process of Tungsten Carbide based hard metals: Development and mechanical characterization of new WC composites; correlation between composition, structure, microstructure, and mechanical properties." From June 2012 to June 2014, he worked in science and technology management at the University of Coimbra's Institute for Interdisciplinary Research and Division of Research Support and Promotion. From July 2014 to December 2018 (4 years + 5 months), he was doing Postdoctoral fellowship financed by FCT - Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology at CEMMPRE - Centre for Mechanical Engineering, Materials, and Processes, University of Coimbra in BioTribology/Bioengineering – Study of the skin friction. A global advisory board assessed the first three years' worth of work as Excellent. Has been a researcher at the University of Coimbra since December 19, 2018, specializing in the mechanical characterization and tribological behaviour of various materials, including metals, polymers, ceramics, and composite materials. Possessing a varied curriculum vitae, including a PhD in mechanical engineering with a focus on mechanical design and a graduation in chemical engineering with a concentration in processes and industry. Having performed various tasks, such as switching between Surface and Physical Engineering and Materials Engineering. Considering a Zig-Zag career path as well; has worked at interdisciplinary institutes, international organizations with a significant industrial component, and research centres at both domestic and foreign universities. Research production: 45 publications in International Journals and 45 works in Conference Proceedings (49 indexed on Scopus) and 32 Participation in conferences and meetings in foreign countries where 25 Presentations were given. Participation in 8 Projects and reviewed for 36 International peer-reviewed-journals where 84 Research works were reviewed. Supervision of 2 PhD theses, 26 master theses, 6 of them from the Erasmus Mundus Joint European Master in Tribology of Surfaces and Interfaces. Member of the jury of 2 PhD thesis, 3 PhD project theses and 29 master theses, 8 presentations at national level in dissemination of funding opportunities (FP7 and Horizon 2020).

2024/01/01 - Atual National delegate of the Management Committee of COST Action on Ocean Tribology Centre (OTC) - (CA23155) - is to create a pan-European-wide network of countries with a strong offshore affiliation for promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing towards the development of sustainable, reliable and energy efficient ocean systems - The OTC Action brings together the leading competences of 41 individual participants from 33 different organisations. Proposers come from a variety of 16 different countries.
