Sofia Pereira (SP)holds a BS.c in Biology (2001), MS.c in Toxicology (2004) and a Ph.D in Biology (2010), all from the University of Aveiro (Portugal). Her doctoral research focused on the role of beneficial microorganisms in promoting plant growth under stress conditions. In 2010, she joined the CBQF/ESB-UCP as an FCT postdoctoral fellow, investigating microbial inoculants for phytoremediation. By 2013, she has started a new research line on bioinoculants for enhancing plant growth across diverse agroclimatic conditions. In 2016, SP contributed to the Bio-n2-value project, developing biofertilizers for field application. From 2019 to 2021, she was a researcher in the AGeNT project, exploring the use of extracellular polymeric substances as plant growth enhancers. She also served as researcher and scientific coordinator of the PRIMA-funded ReCROP project, integrating microbial-based solutions with sustainable farming practices to boost crop resilience in the Mediterranean. Currently, SP is involved in the PRR-funded BioShoes4All project, developing a composite material for footwear. Her scientific activity focuses on advancing biotechnological tools and sustainable practices for agriculture and soil remediation, with particular emphasis on addressing the challenges posed by climate change and abiotic stress. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates soil and plant science, microbiology, and biotechnology, enabling the development of innovative and scalable solutions. Her research spans from controlled laboratory studies to field-based validation, ensuring the applicability and effectiveness of her solutions in real-world agricultural systems. Her work is highly collaborative, involving national and international academic institutions, as well as industrial partners. She has participated in multiple national- and international-funded projects, serving as Principal Investigator in VinAE, Sun2Fork, and MicroDROP, and as a team member in projects such as ReCROP, PhytoSUDOE, and HSoil4Food. Additionally, she has received the CBQF Annual Scientific Incentive Award for 4 consecutive years (2020-2023) for achieving extraordinary outputs in her scientific activities and in 2022 she was awarded with the Amyris Rising Innovation to explore innovative ideas resulting from research. SP has published 50 papers in peer review international journals, 13 book chapters, and 2 editorials. Her work accumulates 1849 citations, with an h-index of 25 (SCOPUS). She is co-author of an international patent and has developed several prototypes. She has presented more than 130 communications at international/national scientific conferences and has been invited to act as both keynote and invited speaker in conferences, seminars and workshops. SP has experience in scientific evaluation having served as a member of academic juries and as evaluator of projects across various funding programs (e.g., Horizon). She also has extensive editorial experience, having served as a guest editor for 12 special issues/research topics in international journals. She also holds the positions of Associate Editor at Frontiers in Plant Science and Academic Editor at Plants and PLos One. SP maintains an active international network through collaborating scientific publications, active participation in 8 Cost Actions and served as a member of the scientific committee for several international conferences. SP has been involved in the supervision/co-supervision of students from different academic levels, including 3 PhD, MSc and undergraduate students. SP is actively engaged in organizing scientific seminars, workshops and outreach initiatives to bridge the gap between science and society. She also delivers invited talks and contributes to magazines, as well as radio/TV interviews to communicate research findings to diverse audiences and promote public understanding of scientific advances.
