Cristina A Viegas is Assistant Professor in Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of Universidade de Lisboa (UL) and Researcher in the Institute of Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB) of IST / UL. She published 41 articles in scientific journals with peer review, and 4 book chapters. She was invited for the juri of 15 PhD thesis and more than 25 MSc thesis. Her main research interests and activities in the last years (last decade; from the most to the least recent) are: (i) Characterization of the diversity of microorganisms associated with visible signs of biocolonization in construction facades surface (e.g. particularly made with ETICS - External thermal insulation composite systems), with basis on phylogenetic analysis of metagenomic DNA, as well as colony isolation and phylogenetic identification of culturable fungi; (ii) Evaluation of the ecotoxicological potential of currently used and innovative construction materials (related to possible release of deleterious compounds into leaching waters during production, disposal and/or recycling of construction materials); (iii) Assessment of the potential detoxification achieved upon biological treatment of textile wastewaters, using in-house yeast-based phenotypic and gene expression bioassays; (iv) Transcriptomic profiling in Saccharomyces cerevisiae for predicting genetic toxicity indicators and mode of action of environmentally relevant pesticides, and viewing development of yeast-based toxicity bioassays; (v) Optimization and examination of the efficacy of the soil bacterial strains Arthrobacter aurescens TC1 and Pseudomonas sp. ADP as bioaugmentation tools for the bioremediation of soil contaminated with the herbicidal active ingredient terbuthylazine. She completed her PhD in Biotechnology in 1993 by Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (UTL) / IST, the Mestrado MSc in Biotechnology (Biochemical Engineering) in 1988 by IST / UTL and the graduation in Chemical Engineering (specialization on Chemistry and Processes) in 1984 by IST / UTL.
