Daniel Gamito Marques has been working as professional historian of science for 9 years, specializing in history of natural history (18th-20th centuries) and science and imperialism (19th-20th centuries). His current project researches the links between geography, colonialism and diplomacy in the Portugue Scramble for Africa. After a 5-year training in biology (BSc and MSc), he successfully completed a PhD in History of Science in 2015 at NOVA School of Science and Technology. He is currently Research Fellow at the Interuniversity Center for the History of Science and Technology (CIUHCT), a joint center of the NOVA University of Lisbon and the University of Lisbon. He has participated in 1 project funded by the European Commission (H2020 InsSciDE), and 3 projects funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). He has published in international peer-reviewed jornals, including top references such as 'Isis', 'Archives of Natural History', the 'Journal of the History of Biology', and 'History of Science.' He has also published 5 book chapters, and 5 dictionary entries. He has delivered 30+ talks, 19 of which in congresses of international scope, and organized 5 panels in congresses. He has co-organized 2 sets of monthly conferences on history of science, and literature and science. He has co-organized 1 international congress, 1 national congress, and 1 international workshop. He has participated in 1 Anthropocene Campus, organized by the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, and the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. He has lectured on science and imperialism, science diplomacy, bioethics, and literature and science. He lectured on current Europe-Africa relations and the history of science diplomacy in a summer school at the European Diplomacy Academy, Poland. He is part of 2 international commissions on history of science: Science and Empire, and Science Diplomacy, and he is linked to the international networks Tensions of Europe, and Anthropocene Commons. He has been developing new and creative ways to communicate his results through education, the press, and the performing arts. He has participated in 7 theater workshops, and he has written 2 theater plays that discuss historical knowledge of the sciences: 'The Science of the Future,' and 'All Too Human' (published in 2022). He also staged the former at the Museum of Natural History and Science, Lisbon, and at Culturgest. He has been involved in the establishment of the theater and science field in Portugal, integrating the scientific committee of two national congresses (2021, 2023). His academic achievements were distinguished by receiving the NOVA School of Science and Technology Prize and the title of Distinguished Young Scientist in Humanities by the Lisbon Academy of Sciences.

2024/09/06 - 2024/09/06 I co-organized the official symposium of the Commission on Science, Technology and Diplomacy at the 11th International Conference of the European Society for the History of Science. This 3-part symposium problematized the current characterization of science diplomacy as a post-WWII phenomenon. It had 11 communications on pre-WII periods, focusing on coordinated responses to transnational health threats (Part 1), technoscientific standardization and cooperation (Part 2), and use of science and technology for imperial ends (Part 3). 2023/11/16 - 2023/11/16 I organized the Panel 'Science, Diplomacy, and the Resolution of Crisis' at the 7th Portuguese Congress of History of Science and Technology. Its aim was to build on the work conducted in the H2020 project InsSciDE and explore cases of science diplomacy before WWII, thus contributing to the theorization of the understudied deeper past of science diplomacy (2023/11/15 - 2023/11/17)

2023/11/15 - 2023/11/15 I co-organized the Panel 'Portuguese expeditions to Africa in the 19th and 20th centuries: between science and colonialism' at the 7th Portuguese Congress of History of Science and Technology. Its aim was to discuss the political and colonial meanings and repercussions of the several scientific missions to Africa that were organized by the Portuguese government during the Third Portuguese Empire. 2022/11 - 2023/11 I co-organized the FCT NOVA Cinema Club 2023, on the theme of Inclusivity. I selected films that explore the topic in relation to the history of science, technology and medicine, exploring subjects such as colonialism and racism, disease and the medical gaze, technology and the posthuman. The sessions took place in the auditorium of the FCT NOVA Central Library. (2023/03 - 2023/11)

2022/07/01 - 2022/07/01 I organized the Panel 'New Imperialism and the technoscientific construction of natural resources, 1870-1945' at Tensions of Europe Conference 2022. Its aim was to analyze the actors, tools, and ideologies recruited to drive colonial exploitation of natural resources, using a comparative approach to identify commonalities in the colonial strategies taken by different colonial powers. The notion of 'available natural resources' had often to be constructed in order to legitimize colonialism, with the help of technoscientific tools. (2022/07/01 - 2022/07/01)

2022/06/23 - 2022/06/23 I co-organized a workshop with Léonard Laborie (Sorbonne University) on 'Instrumental relations or co-shaping of science and diplomacy?' at the InsSciDE Open Conference Paris. We dynamized conversations amongst small groups of researchers and practitioners in science diplomacy in order to discuss how science and diplomacy influence one another, and its implications for contexts of practice and teaching.
