Howard Lasker is a Research Professor at the University at Buffalo (UB), State University of New York and has been on the faculty at UB since 1979, serving as Professor in the Departments of Biological Science and Geology and most recently as the founding Chair of the Department of Environment and Sustainability. He is a Fellow of the International Coral Reef Society, has served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Coral Reefs. He has conducted research on octocorals for over 40 years, conducting shore and ship-based studies and has been the Chief Scientist on 14 UNOLS cruises (R/V F.G. Walton Smith) to The Bahamas and Virgin Islands. He has authored 94 articles specifically dealing with the biology and ecology of octocorals and has been the Principal Investigator of 26 external grants totaling over US$4M. His research includes studies on the population dynamics and community ecology, reproductive biology, colony growth dynamics and population genetic structure of Caribbean octocorals.
