I am a Researcher at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) and Department of Environment and Planning (DAO) of University of Aveiro, Portugal. My research line is focused on optimising soil engineering and management strategies to improve soil functions/ecosystem services sustainably. Since completing my PhD 15 y ago at Cranfield University (UK), I developed experience in empirical and applied research as well as in science in support of policy, linked to my current position, 3 previous postdoc positions and participation in 12 national and EU projects on soil and/or biochar. At CESAM, I built and lead the BIOCHARCOLOGY research team focused on biochar sustainable applications in agroecology and regenerative agriculture. I am PI or co-PI of 5 on-going national and EU-funded research projects, through which I collaborate with national and international research, agroforestry, policy and educational/literacy institutions. My publications include a European Commission's JRC technical-scientific Report, the European Soil Biodiversity Atlas and the Global Soil Biodiversity Atlas. In indexed publications, I have 99 co-authors (Scopus) from the EU (incl. Regional Ministry of Agricultural, EC JRC and EFSA), UK, Switzerland, Israel and the US. Keywords: soil management and engineering; soil functions/ecosystem services; biochar; soil-biochar-biota interactions; climate change adaptation and mitigation.
