Richard is an Assistant Professor in Técnico, having specialized in gravitational physics. He is currently interested in problems lying at the interface between gravitation, astrophysics and particle physics. He obtained a PhD degree in Physics from the Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon in 2016, under the supervision of Prof. Vitor Cardoso and Prof. Paolo Pani with a thesis focused on studying the physics of fundamental fields around compact objects. The thesis was awarded the Professor Abreu Faro Prize for the best PhD thesis completed between 2015 and 2016 at Instituto Superior Técnico in the subjects of electronics, computer science, physics and mathematics. Between September 2016 and December 2018, he was a postdoctoral researcher under the supervision of Prof. Alessandra Buonanno in the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, Potsdam, Germany. From January 2019 until December 2020 he was a Marie Curie Fellow at the Università degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza under the the supervision of Prof. Paolo Pani, and then was a postdoctoral researcher at Sapienza hired under the ERC grant "DarkGRA" (PI: Prof. Paolo Pani) from February 2021 until June 2021. From July 2021 until February 2025 he was a junior researcher position, funded under FCT's Scientific Employment Stimulus program at CENTRA, the Center for Astrophysics and Gravitation. Since March 2025 he is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics of the Instituto Superior Técnico. He is a co-author in more than 50 original articles published in top international peer-reviewed journals and he co-authored a book on the physics of "Superradiance", published in Springer's book series "Lecture Notes in Physics". He is currently a co-chair of the Fundamental Physics Working Group in the LISA consortium. He regularly gives talks in major conferences and is regularly invited to give seminars at various Universities and conferences.
