Anup Paul (AP) earned his MSc in Organic Chemistry from North-Eastern Hill University (Shillong, India) in 2005, graduating among the top 5 students in the Chemistry Department with an “Excellent” distinction. After two years in industry as a junior research scientist for the process development for intermediate/active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), AP embarked on a PhD journey, supported by the University Grants Commission (UGC), India Research Fellowship for meritorious students. During his PhD, he conducted part of his research at the University of Camerino, Italy (03/2009–04/2010), under Prof. Claudio Pettinari, with a research fellowship, funded by the government of Italy. In 2011, he was awarded the Senior Research Fellowship by the Council of Industrial and Scientific Research (CSIR), India. After completing his PhD in 2012, AP received a CONICET Postdoctoral Fellowship (Argentina), researching supramolecular hybrid compounds (corroles) under Prof. Fabio Doctorowich. He then obtained the prestigious Dr. D.S. Kothari Postdoctoral Fellowship (India, 2013), joining the Indian Institute of Technology, Varanasi. In late 2013, AP won a Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) Postdoctoral Fellowship, Portugal in a highly competitive international call, joining Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon, Portugal, under Prof. Armando J.L. Pombeiro. There, he developed amide-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for catalysis and gas adsorption. In 05/2017, AP joined Don Bosco College, Tura, as an Assistant Professor, teaching undergraduate courses. In 2018, he was awarded an FCT Junior Researcher position (2019) for the project “Functionalized porous MOFs for versatile functionality” and rejoined CQE, IST, Lisbon, on 01/2019. He has since continued his research on MOFs as functional materials for catalysis, energy storage, and environmental applications. AP has published 61 peer-reviewed articles, including 24 as a corresponding author, alongside 3 book chapters (citation> 1300, h index 23). Over the last five years, he has published 36 articles (20 as corresponding author), demonstrating his independence in research. He has delivered 10 oral presentations (4 invited), presented 10 posters at international conferences, and participated in 7 webinars. AP is a reviewer for journals by Elsevier, Wiley, RSC, ACS, and MDPI, and has guest-edited journals like Crystal, Frontiers in Chemistry, and Materials. He is currently a guest editor for Processes and has been on the editorial board of Transient published by Don Bosco College, India, since 2017. During the last 5 years, AP has been involved as well in various activities and contributions to the development of individuals and teams. AP has (co)supervised 1 PhD, 4 MSc, 10 BSc students, 4 Erasmus students (Italy, Spain, and Germany) and supervised 1 Junior researcher, and is presently mentoring 1 PhD student. He has also been involved as an academic jury member of the thesis monitoring committee at IST to evaluate the progress of PhD studies since 2021 and as a member of a jury of academic degrees at IST for the PhD defense exam in Chemistry. He is also involved in teaching advanced Strategies of Synthesis and processes to undergraduate students at IST, Lisbon, Portugal, since 2019. He has submitted and participated in the research team of several projects. PI and Co-PI in three projects funded by ISEL and FCT Portugal, where his role was to synthesize and characterize aMOFs for application in the abatement of emerging environmental pollutants and CO2 reduction. He has participated in several other collaborative projects for the acquisition of funds and recently submitted a collaborative project with King Saud University, Saudi Arabia, for funding through the Research Development and Innovation Authority (IRDA), Saudi Arabia. Currently participated in 2 projects through the FCT call (R&D Projects, 2024), one as a PI and as a research team member in the other.
