André Torres-Pinto (ATP) obtained his doctorate by the University of Porto (December 2023). The title of his PhD Thesis is "Optimised 2D Carbon Materials Activated by Artificial Light and Electrical Current for Catalytic Water and Wastewater Treatment", being focused on novel synthesis methods of metal-free carbon catalysts (graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) and graphyne/graphdiyne) for in situ evolution and activation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for simultaneous removal of organic pollutants from wastewaters. His PhD Thesis revealed that GCN effectively leads to the photocatalytic generation and activation of H2O2 in the presence of organic contaminants - a process that can be employed in the treatment of high organic content agro-industrial wastewaters; and also uncovered the synergy between photo- and electrocatalysis being harnessed with an innovative suspension GCN photoelectrode for pharmaceuticals removal from urban wastewaters. He was awarded with the "International PhD on Advanced Oxidation Processes" label in 2024. He started his research path in 2017 at the Laboratory of Separation and Reaction Engineering and Laboratory of Catalysis and Materials (LSRE LCM) studying material immobilisation and water characterisation. After that, he got 3 competitive fellowships at LSRE-LCM, increasing his expertise in materials synthesis and characterisation and integrated oxidative/catalytic processes for water treatment. Then, he won a predoctoral fellowship from Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia in a highly competitive call, being commended for his strong young researcher's curriculum, innovative and articulate workplan. This culminated with his PhD, allowing him to pursue a Chemical and Biological Engineering doctoral degree at University of Porto, under the supervision of Prof. Adrián M.T. Silva (ORCiD 0000-0001-8551-6353), Prof. Cláudia G. Silva (ORCiD 0000-0001-6469-4871) and Prof. Joaquim L. Faria (ORCiD 0000-0002-6531-3978). Along with his predoctoral studies, he worked as a Teaching Assistant in practical lectures in different units in the Chemical Engineering and Environmental Engineering courses in both Bachelor and Master degrees. He was supervisor of 4 BSc and 1 MSc students at his home institution and also mentored 2 MSc students developing research projects after their bachelor degree. Moreover, he aided and collaborated with exchange predoc and postdoc researchers during their stays at Porto, as demonstrated by joint publications with different international institutions. ATP (h-index 8) has 16 articles (11 as first author) under the topic of synthesis of modified GCN structures for higher performance in several photo/electrocatalytic applications, such as the removal of contaminants, H2O2 production and water splitting. ATP performed a predoctoral research stay (Erasmus+ WORK4ALL 3) at the University of Vigo (01/09-15/12/2023), resulting in 2 publications (1 more under preparation), under the topic of photoelectrocatalytic applications by innovative suspension GCN photoelectrodes. Jointly, his articles have been cited more than 350 times with an evident upward trend. ATP has co-authorship of 1 book destined for industrial use in wastewater treatment by advanced oxidation, created in collaboration with Prof. Bengoa (U. Rovira i Virgili, Spain) under the program CYTED - Programa Iberoamericano de Ciencia y Tecnología para el Desarrollo. Furthermore, he has 19 oral and 32 poster communications in both national (11) and international (24) conferences. ATP partakes in online scientific dissemination activities with international societies, like Young European Catalysis Network and Young Water Professionals. He was organisation member of 6 international congresses (such as CARBOCAT2018, BioRemid2019 and II Jornadas Ibéricas de Fotocatálise) and in scientific committee of 1.
