Gianmaria Califano is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Plant Biology at the University of Lisbon (since 2022). He graduated in Marine Biology from the University Federico II of Naples, Italy, in 2008, and in 2011, he earned an M.Sc. degree in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation through the Erasmus Mundus program, which involved three European universities: Faro (Portugal), Oviedo (Spain), and Gent (Belgium). Following his role as a research technician on FCT-funded projects at the Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR), he joined the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Ph.D. program in Germany at Friedrich Schiller University Jena within the Chemistry department, obtaining his degree in 2022. In the past two years, Califano has served as Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) on two one-year projects funded by BioISI's internal call. He has co-authored 18 original scientific articles and two book chapters, achieving an h-index of 12 and an i10-index of 13. Califano has participated in eight communications, including four oral presentations at international conferences, workshops, and university open days. He has supervised two master's students and taught several laboratory classes during his Ph.D. and current position. His research focuses on the diversity and function of microorganisms in both natural and engineered ecosystems, emphasizing organism interactions through omics and classical approaches. This work is connected to host-ecosystem health and climate change, contributing to the development of sustainable biotechnological solutions.
