Pedro E. C. Nunes received his BSc. degree in Biochemistry (14 out of 20) from Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Coimbra, in 2015. He then moved to ICBAS, University of Porto, as a master's student in Oncology. He started his master's work in 2016, supervised by Professor Doctor M. Helena Vasconcelos and co-supervised by Professor Doctor Manuel A. Sobrinho-Simões and Doctor Hugo R. Caires, at the Cancer Drug Resistance group of IPATIMUP/i3S. Pedro's work explored the viability of liquid biopsies as an alternative to the traditional (and painful) bone marrow aspiration on Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) diagnosis and monitorization. Here, he isolated extracellular vesicles from AML patients' blood and analysed in terms of concentrations, size, morphology and content. Pedro has developed a promising EV-based liquid biopsy approach for the monitoring of minimal residual disease AML patients¿ peripheral blood, which has already been submitted as Provisional Patent Proposal. His master's thesis was evaluated with a 19 mark out of 20, resulting in a final result of 18 out of 20 in his master's degree. Since November of 2020, Pedro joined to PolySyc group, led by Professor Doctor Jorge Coelho at CEMMPRE/UC. At the moment, Pedro is a PhD student with a FCT grant and he aims to develop a novel generation of biomimetic wound dressings based on cationic poly(ester amide)s during his PhD work.
