Rita Nogueira completed the PhD in Civil Engineering in 2016 on the study of lime-based mortars for old renders at IST, University of Lisbon. She is Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering of IST since then, teaching 4 courses of Construction Materials and Construction Technology to Integrated Masters of Civil Engineering and Architecture. She is also member of the CERIS Research and Development Unit, hosted by IST-UL. Her research field is the construction materials, with focus in mixture design and behaviour of mortars and concrete, compatible materials for ancient masonry, conservation of built heritage, inspection and diagnosis of anomalies. In 2018, she was awarded with a grant funding from a CERIS exploratory project, with the purpose of starting a new research field on the CO2-capture by cement-based materials, where she has been working since then. In 2019 she spent three productive months of a sabbatical leave in the Civil Engineering of KU Leuven to further investigate the early-age carbonation and hardening mechanisms of cement materials, which allowed her to learn different testing techniques. She participated in three R&D projects (two national, WP10B-c5Lab and RiceHusk+; and one international, BIOCO2) where she has the privilege of collaborating and networking with national and international researchers and also industry partners, having the opportunity of working as part of a larger team. In detail, she developed work in innovative solutions for a sustainable construction, namely low-CO2 binders and CO2 sequestration by cementitious materials and their early-age properties. Currently, she participates in other three industry cooperation projects on the topics of modular concrete construction, carbonation of cement and concrete, being the co-coordinator of one of them. Se coordinates two PhDs on the carbonation of cement waste and on the carbonation of concrete blocks for masonry. She published 22 peer-reviewed articles, participated in 23 oral communications and coordinated 14 MSc.
