- J.P. Gomes obtained the PhD degree in 2006 under the supervision of Deborah Dean (Children¿s Hospital Oakland Research Institute, California/USA), being awarded with the European PathoGenoMics PhD Award 2007. He is the Head of the Genomics/Bioinformatics Unit of the Dep. Infect. Diseases at the Portuguese National Institute of Health (INSA). - He is currently the national coordinator of the task force to monitor SARS-CoV-2 genetic variants and is member of the national Experts group to provide the Government scientific advice towards the pandemics control. His team is also involved in the development and implementation of software pipelines (e.g. INSaFLU: https://insaflu.insa.pt/covid19/; ReporTree: https://doi.org/10.21203/rs.3.rs-1404655/v1) towards the facilitation of genomic analysis and the association of genomic data with metadata for an integrative surveillance of infectious diseases. - He supervised 11 PhD students (9 concluded, 2 ongoing) in microbial genomics and has been an invited speaker in more than 20 Meetings. - He has published more than 120 peer reviewed papers, including in the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Medicine and Nature Microbiology. - J.P.Gomes participated in the last 5 years as member of the evaluation panel of Grants funded by International organisms such as the European Food Safety Authority, the European Research Era, the Wellcome Trust and the German Fed Min of Education and Research. - He participated (as collaborator or PI) in more than 30 Grants, including 4 (as collaborator) on behalf of the OneHealth approach (OneHealth EJP-JIP06-COVRIN; OneHealth EJP-JRP13-R2-AMR2.22-FED AMR; OneHealth EJP-JRP24-FBZSH9-BEONE; OneHealth EJP¿JRP21-R2-ET2-TELE-Vir). - He was the PI of a 2.3 M€ Grant funded by the EU (ECDC/HERA/2021/021 ECD.12236) aiming at strengthening the sequencing capacity of Portugal towards better surveillance of infectious diseases. - He is currently the PI of another European Grant of 1.5 M€ funded by the European Comission (EU4H-2022-DGA-MS-IBA-1 - Proposal ID-101113460), aiming at improving the WGS-based surveillance of infectious diseases and the information exchange with national and international health authorities. - His team enrolls 10 people (8 PhD and two technicians) working in microbial genomics, with total access to the NIH sequencing core-facility with the sequencing instruments NextSeq 1000/2000, NextSeq 550, MiSeq, and several MinIon.
