Doctor Joana C. Antunes (JCA) obtained her MSc (from University of Minho, UM, specialized in Biomaterials, Biomechanics and Rehabilitation) and PhD (through the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto) degrees in Biomedical Engineering. Both accomplishments included work abroad (Polytechnic University of Valencia in Spain, and University Medical Center Mainz of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Germany), while studying bone and cartilage tissue regeneration, with high emphasis in polymer-based processing methodologies driven by electrostatic interactions. Two post-doctoral positions at INSERM U1148 (France) allowed her to expand her knowledge in nanoparticle research, either polymer-based for targeted gene delivery against myocardial infarction, or inorganic magnetic nanoparticles directed at cancer cell death or early-stage fibrosis detection for atherothrombotic diseases. As a Junior Researcher at the Centre for Textile Science and Technology (2C2T), JCA designed and tested bactericidal films, fibres, nanofibers and nanoparticles (project PETEX, ref. PTDC/CTM-TEX/ 28074/2017), being now integrated in Fibrenamics - Institute of Innovation on Fiber-based Materials and Composites, devoted to the development of macro-to-nanoscale multifunctional and multilayer structures for personal protective equipment and clothing against chemical and biological threats (projects ProtechMask and PluriProtech, ref. POCI-01-0247-FEDER-070021 and POCI-01-0247-FEDER-047012, respectively). Overall, JCA is skilled in biomaterials processing, functionalization and characterization of multiple architectures, in vitro cell culture, imaging, molecular biology, ex vivo whole-organ cultures and microbiology, being particularly invested in nanoparticles for targeted and controlled bioactive agent¿s action and delivery, cell/tissue-material interface and infection control. Her expertise has been integrated in 12 EU/national research projects. She has authored 2 book chapters, 26 articles, 10 conference proceedings, 35 oral and 22 poster communications, with a h-factor of 11 and 423 citations (Scopus). Supervision experience includes 3 PhD (1 as supervisor) and 2 MSc students (as co-supervisor). Doctor Joana C. Antunes has also received 5 awards and 7 distinctions that include guest editor and editorial board member positions, and certification in 2020 to apply for Assistant Professor positions in Cell Biology by the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. She also works as a reviewer for 29 journals. In January 2022, JCA as European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) Research Grant as Principal Investigator of the project StarLig - Bacterial cell-specific targeting and nanoparticle-mediated bactericidal action against the most common pathogens colonizing diabetic foot ulcers.
