João Tadeu Silva Fontes holds a degree in Applied Biology, which he earned in 2017 from the University of Minho. During his undergraduate studies, he completed a research internship in the field of Ecotoxicology, split between the University of Minho and the University of Porto. In 2020, he obtained his master's degree in Ecology from the University of Minho. His master's project involved creating an automated R-based system for compiling, auditing, and annotating animal DNA barcode reference libraries. The final version of this system also included a user-friendly web application. His primary area of expertise lies in applying Bioinformatics to Molecular Ecology, with a particular focus on (e)DNA (meta)barcoding. He has authored one peer-reviewed paper and co-authored two others. He makes use of different proggraming languages, software and data bases for the tackling of biological and ecological problems. His technical laboratory skills include the maintenance of freshwater invertebrates, spectrophotometry, DNA extraction and quantification, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), electrophoresis, among others. His practical experience extends to sampling aquatic organisms, both in fieldwork and aboard research vessels. Currently, he is pursuing a Ph.D. at the Centre of Molecular and Environmental Biology (CBMA) at the University of Minho. His doctoral research focuses on DNA barcoding and phylogeography of Atlantic marine fish species, and he is a team member of two international research projects.
