Joana Guerreiro was awarded a Junior RESEARCH POSITION (3rd ed, 2021) under the Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus and recently she was again awarded an Auxiliary Research Contract (6th ed). She obtained her PhD in chemistry (2015) from the University of Porto, in COLLABORATION with Aarhus University-DK where she did most of her research. Following her PhD, she spent a year as Postdoc at Aarhus University before returning to Portugal after more than 5 years abroad. She joined the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) for 4 years before starting her current position as CONTRACTED RESEARCHER at CEB-ISEP. JG has over 16 years of experience in the BIOSENSORS FIELD in MULTIDISCIPLINARY areas (nanotechnology, biointerfaces, molecular biology) both in national and international research environments. Through her scientific path, JG gained strong experience in the development of tools, devices, and functional interfaces applied to the understanding of biological systems or for the detection of specific target molecules (antibiotics, DNA, protein biomarkers). From simple paper-based to more complex nanofabrication devices, JG was always eager to explore biosensing potentialities and embrace new projects and challenges. She had the opportunity to integrate R&D projects funded by FCT, EUROPEAN COMMISSION (FET-OPEN, Cascade Funding, Interreg), and a Project in cooperation with a SPANISH PUBLIC INSTITUTION. Her role in the projects focused on the development of SENSING MATERIALS/DEVICES for real-life applications such as the DETECTION OF ANTIBIOTICS at the environment/food matrices, DIAGNOSIS OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES and CANCER, as well as the study of PROTEIN AND SMALL MOLECULE INTERACTIONS in biological systems. In the last 5 yrs, JG research has focused on detecting DNA from specific species to identify ENVIRONMENTAL INVASIVE SPECIES and MALARIA PARASITES for multiplex diagnosis, using OPTICAL BIOSENSORS and GRAPHENE field-effect transistors. JG was also dedicated to the development of optical sensors and their integration with MICROFLUIDIC AUTOMATED SYSTEMS and DNA AMPLIFICATION strategies. Alongside a team of experts on the development of analytical approaches based on MOLECULAR BIOLOGY methodologies, JG developed new skills regarding standard and alternative DNA detection. JG's research skills combine MULTIDISCIPLINARY fields such as nanotechnology, surface interfaces, molecular biology, and immune sensing, which are essential for the successful development of new biosensing devices. JG has SUPERVISED 4 PhD students (3 visitors, abroad stays of 6 months to 1yr), 5 master students (2 concluded, 2 lab supervision, and an ERASMUS internship), and 5 internships of undergraduate students from Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering from FEUP/ICBAS and UTAD (4 concluded and 1 ongoing). JG integrated 3 NATIONAL and 4 INTERNATIONAL projects, PUBLISHED 24 peer-reviewed publications (3 as the corresponding author, 1 on HOLD due to patent submission, and 1 under revision) in INTERNATIONAL JOURNALS, 4 BOOK CHAPTERS, 3 PATENT applications (PCT and national). JG has also contributed to 17 ORAL PRESENTATIONS (2 Invited KEYNOTES and invited roundtable) and 24 posters at international conferences. JG was AWARDED 3 TRAVEL GRANTS, 1 best oral presentation at an international conference, and the 1st prize for the most innovative project of 1st Hackathon Great Expectations INL-ICVS. Over the last 5 yrs, JG and a team of 3 postdoc researchers have created a spin-off of Minho University dedicated to the development of graphene sensors for new-generation diagnostics, IPLEXMED. JG aims to continue working on the development of new biosensing device tools to fight ENVIRONMENTAL ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE.
