Zita Vale (PhD, 1993, Agregação/Habilitation, 2003, Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Porto-UP). She is GECAD co-founder (1999, 3 co-founders) and coordinates GECAD’s Power and Energy (PES) activities. GECAD is recognized by FCT since 2004, classified as Excellent. She has been/is GECAD director (2010-2017), vice-director (1999-2009+2017-present), and administration board member. She is co-founder and member of the coordination board of the National Associated Laboratory on Intelligent Systems, operating since 2021, constituted by GECAD and other 12 FCT research units, coordinating 1 of its 5 Research lines (Smart Cities, Energy and Mobility). She was Teaching Monitor (1985), Assistant (1985-1993), and Professor (1993-1998) in UP. In 1998 she moved to the Institute of Engineering (ISEP) of Polytechnic of Porto (IPP) as Coordinator Professor, where she was the first to assume a Full Professor position in 2017. Her main interests regard the design and development of artificial intelligence-based models to PES, including knowledge-based systems, multiagent systems, machine learning, metaheuristics, and semantics. The main application fields of these projects are: smart grids, with intensive use of renewables, addressing the management of energy resources (generation, storage, demand response, and electric vehicles); buildings and consumers, addressing real time energy management; electricity wholesale and local markets, aggregators, and energy communities addressing prices and tariffs, transactive energy, and market simulation. Zita Vale has an extensive international network and participated in 80 R&D projects (29 international, 51 national), with management and coordination responsibilities, namely as Principal Investigator (PI) in 23 and coordinating GECAD team in 61 projects. She raised more than 22MEuro for GECAD. Special highlights are due for projects ELECON (FP7) and DREAM-GO (H2020), two Marie Curie actions for which she has been Principal Investigator (PI), and IoTalentum, TRADERES, DOMINOES, EcoRural-IoT, all from H2020, PRODUTECH EU DIH (Horizon Europe) and several European Eureka projects like SEAS, FUSE-IT, M2M Grids, SPEAR, in which she was/is the GECAD coordinator. She is GECAD coordinator in NGS-New Generation Storage (a large national project) and in many FCT and other national projects. She published over 1200 works, including more than 270 papers in international scientific journals, and owns intellectual property of 3 patents. She has the following indicators in Google Scholar, Scopus and WoS: 17155 / 11171 / 7271 citations, H-index 64 /50 /43, and 347 / 253 / 157 i10. She is/was the supervisor of 25 PhD (22 complete) and 72MSc (66 complete) students and co-supervisor of 4PhD (1 complete) and 12 MSc students (4 complete). Zita has responsibilities in international and national organizations (e.g. President of Intelligent Systems Applications in Power (ISAP), Technical Committee Program Chair of IEEE PES Analytic Methods for Power Systems Committee. Zita is Editor in Chief of Applied Energy (APEN), Elsevier (+ 13k submissions in 2023, IF: 11.2, CiteScore: 21.1) since 2022, working towards more fair and ethical manuscripts processing, so that published papers are better drivers for the advancement of knowledge. She is Associate Editor for other journals (e.g. Springer: Scientific Reports, Discover Energy; Elsevier: e-Prime, SEGAN). In the last 5 years, she edited 3 scientific books (2 Wiley/IEEE, 1 Elsevier/A. Press). Regularly involved in scientific and pedagogic evaluation, in 2018-2023 she contributed to 225+ evaluation processes, in 15+ countries: 150+ project proposals/execution, 50+ Faculty/Researchers positions (many Full Professor or tenure-track positions), 2 Habilitation juries, and 25+ PhD juries, for different agencies as European Commission (CNEA, ERC), ANR, SFI, NSERC.
