André M. Machado has completed his Bachelor’s degree in Biology at the University of Lisbon – Faculty of Science in 2013, and his Master’s degree in Biotechnology at University of Lisbon – Instituto Superior Técnico in 2016. Between 2016 and 2020, he worked as a Bioinformatician at the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR, University do Porto) within the Animal Genetic and Evolution Group. He was responsible for development and design of next generation sequencing (transcriptomic and genomic) pipelines for generating, processing and analyzing biological data in several aquatic organisms. During this period, he participated in Poseidon CIIMAR cluster building, an was primarly responsible for managing, installing, implementing and developing of biological pipelines. In 2020, André M. Machado began a PhD in Biology at University of Porto, focusing on the chemical defensome machinery across various metazoan species. Throughout his PhD (2020–2025) he continued to specialize in bioinformatics, with a particular focus on whole genome and transcriptome assembly and annotation, gene expression profiling and upstream analyses as well as comparative genomic approaches across a wide range of species. During his doctoral studies, he attended several advanced courses in biology and data management, including the EMBO Hands-on course in genome sequencing assembly and downstream analyses as well as the Gulbenkian Institute and Biodata courses ‘Ready for BioData Management?’ and ‘Data Stewardship Program for the Life Sciences’. Over the last nine years, André M. Machado has co-authored 56 ISI-indexed publications in peer-reviewed international journals, collaborating with over 200 different researchers. He has also contributed to 11 research projects and has actively participated in scientific meetings and workshops, delivering both posters and oral presentations. His many contributions to the field of genomics include several assemblies of whole genomes, transcriptome and mitogenomes assemblies from chondrichthyans, freshwater fish, marine fish till marine invertebrates. His main research focus is the application of omics sequencing data, implemented through computational biology, to elucidate the evolutionary dynamics and biological pathways of metazoan organism.
