TL Duarte (TLD) graduated in Biology by the University of Lisbon in 2000 and completed an MSc in Molecular Genetics (Distinction) by the University of Leicester (UK) in 2001. In 2007, TLD obtained his PhD from the University of Leicester, for studying the so-called non-antioxidant roles of vitamin C. Between February 2006 and March 2008, TLD was employed as Research Assistant at the University of Leicester, where he supported the University microarray facility and contributed to studies on DNA damage formation and repair. In 2008, TLD joined the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology (IBMC) - University of Porto as 'Ciência 2007' Research Assistant. TLD demonstrated the crucial hepatoprotectant role of transcription factor NRF2 against iron toxicity in mice, and more recently the ability of NRF2 to sense toxic iron and regulate BMP6/hepcidin signalling. He is currently a Researcher at the Basic and Clinical Research on Iron Biology group (Head: Graça Porto) at IBMC/i3S. Overall, TLD published 1 (invited) book chapter, 3 review articles and 21 original papers in international peer review journals with accumulated >1000 citations. TLD also: obtained ca. 370,000 euros funding as PI; completed the supervision of 10 MSc students; presented orally in several international scientific meetings; contributed regularly to official Doctoral programs of the University of Porto; is member of a scientific society (European Iron Club) and peer reviewer for over 20 journals, including Antioxidants & Redox Signalling, Free Radical Biology and Medicine, Journal of Hepatology, and Redox Biology. TLD is member of the i3S Animal Welfare and Ethics Review Body and Editorial Board member of Antioxdants & Redox Signaling.
