Matilde Moreira-Santos has expertise in the scientific area Biological Sciences, sub-areas Ecology and Biodiversity and Environmental Sciences, and specialization in Ecotoxicology, with emphasis on the reduction of uncertainties in extrapolations (e.g. from lab to field) inherent in prospective and retrospective Ecological Risk Assessment, specifically on exposure pathways and the effects of anthropogenic stressors (e.g. pesticides) and natural abiotic factors (due to global climate change, e.g. salinization), across levels of biological organization, freshwater and coastal areas and geographical regions. This path, strongly aligned with the global commitment to sustainability (particularly with UN SDGs 6, 14, 15) and at national/regional level with the Research and Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialization (particularly axis 4: Natural Resources and Environment, in the topic Water and Environment), led her to acquire expertise in: (1) development and validation of standardized, ecologically relevant tests with organisms representing the main taxonomic (bacteria, microalgae, macrophytes, crustaceans, insects, amphibians, small fish) and functional groups and environmental compartments (pelagic, benthic); (2) contaminants as habitat disruptors with effects on the spatial distribution of aquatic organisms thus on ecosystems structure/function; (3) impacts of contaminants through the use of outdoor model ecosystems (mesocosms) and the integration of the consequences of soil contamination (through leaching, runoff); (4) tropical ecotoxicology; (5) provision of sound scientific knowledge to support the decision-making processes in the policy and management of aquatic systems; (6) network of national/international collaborations reflected in the co-supervision of students and funding of scientific projects; (7) teaching/supervision of national/international undergraduate/MSc/PhD/pos-graduate courses. --------- Matilde Moreira-Santos é especialista em Ciências Biológicas, subáreas da Ecologia e Biodiversidade e das Ciências do Ambiente, e especialização em Ecotoxicologia, com enfase no domínio da Ecotoxicologia Aquática, nomeadamente na redução das incertezas nas extrapolações (e.g. do lab para o campo) inerentes aos processos prospetivos e retrospetivos de Avaliação do Risco Ecológico, especificamente sobre as vias de exposição e os efeitos de stressors antropogénicos (e.g. pesticidas) e abióticos naturais (devido às alterações climáticas globais, e.g. salinização), ao longo de níveis de organização biológica, zonas de água doce e costeiras e regiões geográficas. Este percurso, fortemente alinhado com o compromisso global para a sustentabilidade (em particular com os ODS 6,14, 15 da ONU) e a nível nacional/regional com a Estratégia de lnvestigação e lnovação para uma Especialização lnteligente (em particular o eixo 4: Recursos Naturais e Ambiente, no tópico Agua e Ambiente), levou-a a adquirir asequinte especialização: (1) desenvolvimento e validação de ensaios padronizados ecologicamente relevantes com organismos dos principais grupos taxonómicos, funcionais e compartimentos ambientais; (2) contaminantes como perturbadores do habitat com efeitos na distribuição espacial dos organismos aquáticos; (3) impactos dos contaminantes utilizando ecossistemas modelo ao ar livre (mesocosmos) e integrando as consequências da contaminação dos solos (por lixiviação e escoamento); (4) ecotoxicologia tropical; (5) disponibilização de conhecimentos científicos para apoiar nos processos de tomada de decisões na política e gestão dos sistemas aquáticos; (6) rede de colaborações nacionais/internacionais refletida na co-orientação de estudantes e financiamento de projetos científicos; (7) ensino/supervisão de cursos nacionais/ internacionais de licenciatura/MSc/PhD/p6s-graduacão.
