I am a Group Leader and Lecturer since 2015 at the University of Lisbon (after 12 years in the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience of King's College London; IoPPN - KCL) where I've set up a biomedical neuroscience research lab (dpratalab.wordpress.com). I have seeded our lab initially at the iMM institute in 2015, and in 2018 transferred it to IBEB. I am also a current Visiting Lecturer at IoPPN -KCL and a Collaborator of the Centre for Psychological Research and Social Intervention (CIS) of IUL-ISCTE. I had become a biologist at the University of Lisbon in 2002, and moved to the IoPPN-KCL, as a Leonardo da Vinci fellow. Awarded an FCT fellowship, I completed therein a PhD in 2009. Two years later, I was awarded the prestigious UK NIHR post-doc fellowship, then a Lectureship at KCL, a KCL Academic Advancement promotion, and distinguished by KCL as a Top Early Career Researcher in the UK Research Excellence Framework 2014. In the same year, I was awarded a FCT Investigator contract and a Marie Curie Career Integration Grant, as a young PI; in 2017 I co-founded (as CSO) a spin-off company. For my work as PI, I have been distinguished with the 2017 Marie Curie 3rd Prize as ‘Most Promising Scientist in Innovation & Entrepreneurship’; three recent publications-based prizes by two universities (the 2019 & 2020 ISCTE-IUL Scientific Prizes, and an 2020 Honorable Mention by Univ. Lisbon). In 2019 was the (only) researcher distinguished in the triannual FCT 2019 international Evaluation Report of IBEB as “a researcher whose activity should be strongly supported”. Recently, in 2023, I was awarded the 2022 FCT Scientific Employment contract, placed Top 1st in Psychology, in a nation-wide competition. In 2024, I have been selected as one of the top 5 “Core CVs” of my host institution (IBEB). I’ve been sole PI of €2M in 31 grants (since 2015: 18 totalling €1M+). Since 2015, from CE (FP7 Marie Curie CIG), Bial Foundation, iMM and 4 from FCT. In 2017 I founded NeuroPsyAI, Ltd, for which I won awards from CE (H2020 SME Instrument, EIT Headstart, EIT Catapult), Caixa Capital, 5 1st prizes (e.g. Founders Factory London as ‘Top-5 2018 AI Rising Star’). In 2019-2020, I won 3 Scientific Prizes (ISCTE; Univ. Lisbon). My PI work (started in 2015) has now significantly contributed (papers in https://dpratalab.wordpress.com/papers/): 1) to characterize the (positive) role of oxytocin in human social behaviour, and its various neurocorrelates using the above biomedical engineering techniques and a range of psychological paradigms, namely behaviours such as cooperation, trust, empathy, both in health and in psychosis, with current work now extending to autism, psychopathy and dance-based bonding; 2) to the improvement of methodological strategies in genetics and neuroimaging analysis; and 3) to the development of machine-learning based models to help in diagnosis and prognosis of neurologocal and psychatric illnesses, such as dementia and psychosis. We combine cognitive psychology and psychiatry with MRI, EEG, ECG, SCR, pupillometry, eye-tracking, (epi)genetics and proteomics, and advanced statistics. I hold an H-index of 30 (>3400 cit., from 2006; Google), based on 66 PubMed-indexed articles, from which 15 1st-author (6 in IF>10) and 27 last-author (since 2015). Since 2015 I’m invited to ~57 meetings (18 international e.g. Eur Cong Psychiatry, World Cong Psychiatry), and ~75 TV/radio/documentaries (e.g. History Channel, French radio, national media). I’m invited expert at 13 international funding bodies (e.g. EU REA, MRC, UK Royal Society, and French/Austrian), 40+ journals, 9 societies and 6 advisory boards.
