Dr. Castilla completed his B.Sc. in Biology (2005), M.Sc. (2006) and Ph.D. (2012) in Plant Biology at the University of Seville. His postdoctoral experience includes an initial period in the United States at the University of Texas at Austin (4 years) and Northern Arizona University (7 months). During this period, he built a broad network of international collaborators (7 countries). After being awarded the highly competitive postdoctoral FCT fellowship, he began his current position at the Centre for Applied Ecology “Prof. Baeta Neves” (Lisbon, Portugal). Overall, his research program focuses on the conservation genetics of wild plant species under the ongoing scenario of global change. In his research, he places an emphasis on the role played by plant-animal interactions for the maintenance of genetic connectivity and phenotypic variability of plant populations. He has a productive publication record (19 JCR articles; 42% in Q1, h-index=6, 11 as 1st author and 10 coauthored by students under my supervision) in top journals such as PNAS, Molecular Ecology, Journal of Applied Ecology, Annals of Botany or American Journal of Botany. He has extensive mentoring experience (officially recognized: 1 Ph.D. and 2 M.Sc. students; not officially recognized: 4 Ph.D. and 7 undergraduate students). This mentoring has been developed in an international environment involving institutions from four countries (University of Texas at Austin, University of Panama, University of Lisbon, University Pablo de Olavide). He has communicated the results of his research in 16 national (2) and international (14) scientific meetings. He has a successful funding record of research fellowships (5) and grants (1) for a total amount of 191,130 euros. He has been part of the organizing committees for international symposiums (2) and consortiums (1). In collaboration with Xavier Picó (EBD-CSIC) and Mohamed Abdelaziz (University of Granada), he is currently editing the special issue “The ecology and genetics of population differentiation in plants” for the scientific journal AoB plants. During his postdoctoral period, he has acquired teaching experience by participating as guest lecturer at the UT Austin in USA (5 lectures) and the Technische Universität München in Germany (1 lecture). He has also participated as instructor of two workshops at the UT Austin in USA and the Organization for Tropical Studies in Costa Rica. Finally, Dr. Castilla has participated in two outreach programs at The University of Texas at Austin demonstrating his commitment with the communication of science to broader audiences.
