Lígia M. Saraiva is a Full Professor in Biochemistry in ITQB-NOVA. She leads the Molecular Mechanisms of Pathogen Resistance Lab that has as main focus to study the Survival Mechanisms of Human Pathogens, by investigating the following areas: i) Microbial Heme Biosynthesis; ii); bacterial defenses against Oxidative and Nitrosative Stress imposed by the innate immune system, and iii) development of Carbon Monoxide Releasing Compounds (CORMs) as new antimicrobials. The research aims at characterizing microbial phenotypes under stress conditions and deciphering the role of genes/proteins in specific bacterial metabolisms, using a multidisciplinary approach encompassing molecular genetics, microbiology, and biochemistry. She has authored over 130 articles in international journals and holds 2 registered patents (Google Scholar: H-index 41, citations >5200). Over the years, she has supervised 14 PhD theses and has been involved as a Principal Investigator or co-PI in more than 25 research projects.
