Maria João is a Junior Researcher in the Biofilm Engineering Lab (BEL) - Biotechnology group from LEPABE at the Faculty of Engineering University of Porto (FEUP). She obtained her PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering (FEUP, May 2023), and her research focuses on Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Biofilm Science, Environmental Biotechnology and Molecular Biology fields. Specifically, she presents key qualifications on marine biofouling and environment, biofilm assays, and evaluation of biofilm structure and composition by optical and molecular approaches. She completed her BSc in Applied Biology (2012) and her MSc in Bioengineering (2014) at University of Minho. During her master's thesis, she joined the Biofilm Research Group (Centre of Biological Engineering), where she had the opportunity to study the impact of chemical disinfection on the virulence of survived biofilm cells in food processing areas. In her master's thesis, she also had the opportunity to first engage "omics approaches," particularly through transcriptomic studies. In 2015, she expanded her biofilm research at BEL as a research fellow, working on medical, food, and mainly marine biofilms. She worked in a collaborative network with CIIMAR evaluating the biofilm development potential of marine strains and testing the potential of marine compounds to control biofilms in marine, medical and food processing areas. In 2019, she received a competitive PhD grant from the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT) and she started her PhD thesis under the supervision of Dr. Filipe Mergulhão (FEUP) and the co-supervision of Professor Vítor Vasconcelos (CIIMAR) to accomplish marine biofilms research. Through her PhD, she investigated the influence of hydrodynamics and different surfaces on marine biofilm development, structure, and composition. Moreover, her PhD also contributed to a platform validation that mimics hydrodynamics in marine settings, the advancement of innovative tools for OCT image analysis, and novel proteomic protocols to analyze marine biofilms. Over her research journey, she also had the opportunity to perform several International Scientific Missions promoted by different International Projects/COST actions to deepen her knowledge in biofilm science. Specifically, she visited the University Medical Center Groningen 3 times (The Netherlands, 2018, 2022, 2023), the Newcastle University (UK, 2020) and the University of Copenhagen (Denmark, 2022). Beyond working with crucial techniques for biofilm research, these periods abroad facilitated the establishment and continuous progress of fruitful collaborations, such as those performed with UMCG leading to the development of the innovative advanced tool for OCT image analysis. In addition to her extensive experience collaborating with international research teams, she also works with nationals, such as CIIMAR, on proteomic analysis. In 2016 she was hired as an Invited Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences (master’s in Chemical Engineering at FEUP). She published 15 journal articles in Q1/Q2 journals (11 as 1st author, 13 focused on marine biofilms), 3 book chapters (2 as 1st author also on marine biofilms) and 1 edited book. Moreover, 47% of her journal articles are internationally co-authored. She has been involved in several international projects/COST Actions (such as the European project SurfSAFE) and participated in different courses/workshops (such as in High-Throughput Proteomics and SEM/AFM analysis at the Institute of Physics, University of Tartu, Estonia), sharing her work in multidisciplinary networks by 24 oral/poster presentations. Moreover, she was involved in the organization of 4 Scientific Events, science management and outreach activities to society. Currently, she is a Junior Researcher under the scope of the BacAllFree Project "Controlling bacteria and allergen contamination in the food industry using biomimetic surfaces".
