In 1998, I completed my Licenciatura in Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Lisbon (IST). Subsequently, I pursued my M.Sc. in Ecology, Management, and Modelling of Marine Resources at the same institution. Between 2003 and 2007, I took a double Ph.D. degree in Earth and Life Sciences from the Free University of Amsterdam and Environmental Engineering from the Technical University of Lisbon (IST). Additionally, I completed a post-graduation in Economics at the Technical University of Lisbon (ISEG). Since 1999, I have been working at the Technical University of Lisbon, Department of Mechanical Engineering, progressing from an Assistant Trainee (1999-2002) to an Assistant (2002-2007) and an Assistant Professor from 2007 onwards. I've taught courses in Thermodynamics, Environmental Modelling, Applied Ecology, Energy Management, and Climate, Energy, and the Environment, earning recognition as an "excellent teacher" in Thermodynamics, Energy Management, and Management of Energy Systems. I have actively contributed to online education, collaborating in the development of three Técnico MOOC courses that serve both as resources for flipped classrooms and as standalone offerings. Moreover, I supervised 6 Ph.D. students and over 40 M.Sc. students. Within the University of Lisbon, I was vice-coordinator of International Relations for the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 2018 to 2020. Since 2020, I have been vice-coordinator of the B.Sc. in Environmental Engineering (IST). Since 2014, I have been a researcher at MARETEC/LARSyS, being a member of the board since 2017. In my research, I focus on societal exergy accounting (SEA), which involves examining the energy flows within societies, and Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory, which explores the metabolic processes of organisms. My contributions extend to both theoretical advancements and practical applications in the context of sustainability across diverse scientific domains.
