Paulo holds a Bachelor in Physics (Optics and Electronics - 1990/1991, a Masters in Optoelectronics and lasers (1995) and a PhD in Physics all by the Faculty of Sciences of Porto University (the PhD in a mixed program between Porto and Glasgow University). The PhD workplan was based on the development of integrated optic devices by flame hydrolysis deposition. Novel glasses compositions were studied in particular in what concern photosensitivity and rare earth doping; those materials were used in the development of passive multiplexing devices and fully integrated lasers. Finished on September 2000 with the thesis Silica-on-Silicon Integrated Optics by Flame Hydrolysis Deposition. Paulo Marques is currently an Associate Professor with habilitation at the Physics and Astronomy Department at the Faculty of Sciences, Porto University, Portugal, and since October 2009 is the coordinator of the Center of Applied Photonics of INESCTEC and also the director of the Micro and Nanofabrication Center of Porto University (CEMUP MNTEC). His current research interests include optical sensors, femtosecond laser direct writing techniques for integrated optics and microfabrication in general, microfluidics and optofluidics, Bragg gratings and active devices. During the last decade his research efforts have concentrated in the field of integrated optics using femtosecond laser writing has the main fabrication tool. The main results are related to the demonstration of polarization control in femtosecond written waveguides and integrated waveplates. The fabrication of Bragg and long period gratings either in fibers or planar formats were also focus of attention; more recently efforts have also been concentrated in optofluidics, i.e., the monolithic integration in a single substrate of a microfluidics layer and an optical layer, targeting label free sensing for example. He has supervised 8 PhD and 14 MSc students, and coordinated several national and international projects. He has published 4 world patents (patent family of 32), 2 national (1 submitted) and more than hundred scientific papers in international magazines and conferences and three book chapters.
