André R. S. Marçal é Professor Auxiliar do Departamento de Matemática da Faculdade de Ciencias, Universidade do Porto (FCUP) desde 1999. Obteve a Licenciatura em Física - Ramo Científico (1991) pela FCUP, o Mestrado (1994) e Doutoramento (1998) em Deteção Remota e Processamento de Imagem pela Universidade de Dundee, Escócia, UK.. O seu trabalho de investigação tem incidido em várias áreas de Processamento de Imagem e Deteção Remota, a nível de metodologias e aplicações, sendo autor de mais de 100 artigos científicos, incluindo 27 artigos em revistas com sistema de referee. Até à presente data (Março 2022), tem 1688 citações no Scopus (76 artigos indexados) com h-index=17. Recebeu o prémio para o melhor doutoramento em Deteção Remota no Reino Unido em 1999 (Remote Sensing Society, UK), e o Prémio Inovação em Agricultura em 2007 (Syngenta) em colaboração com Mário Cunha (FCUP), que resultou posteriormente no desenvolvimento da aplicação SprayImageMobile (SIM) para análise automática de papeis hidrosensíveis. Foi Secretário Geral e Vice-Presidente da EARSeL European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories (2005-2010), e editor da série de livros 'Remote Sensing and Digital Image Processing' Springer (2007-2014), em colaboração com F. Meer (ITC, Holanda). Participou em 8 projetos financiados, 2 deles como Investigador Principal. Foi avaliador de projetos para a Comissão Europeia, e entidades do sistema científico em Portugal, EUA, Chipre e Letónia, tendo sido revisor de 41 artigos para 21 revistas científicas internacionais, 89 artigos de conferências e 134 resumos / mini-artigos.
