My academic path mainly focuses on general linguistics and language contact. In particular, I conduct research on a Portuguese-related creole, i.e. Guinea-Bissau Creole (GBC or Kriyol), a language for which not much scientific work is available. My PhD, concluded in 2014 at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Germany), focused on the syntactic-semantic study of bare nouns in GBC and provided a relevant theoretical contribution to the study of noun phrases and number. In 2009, I completed a Master in Linguistics at the University of Florence (Italy), with a thesis on the syntax of the clitic system of GBC. In 2006, I earned the Bachelor degree in Language mediation and intercultural communication (languages studied: English and German) at the University of L'Aquila (Italy). Since 2017, I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre of Linguistics of the University of Lisbon (CLUL), under the supervision of Assistant Professor Tjerk Hagemeijer, with a scholarship of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) . At CLUL, I am carrying out innovative research on GBC with focus on its copular system. Furthermore, an annotated and searchable corpus of GBC is being built at CLUL under my supervision (expected publication by the end of 2020). With this purpose and with the financial help of CLUL, a graduate student, native speaker of GBC, is working under my supervision at the corpus construction: the student's task is to transcribe audio material of GBC and to translate it into Portuguese. The audio material was collected during my fieldworks in Guinea-Bissau (January-April 2018; October-December 2019). An orthography of GBC has been developed for this purpose. Furthermore, I participated in the online course 'Corpus Linguistics: Method, Analysis, Interpretation' (Future Learn, Lancaster University) in order to acquire useful knowledge about the construction and usage of corpora. Among my most recent outputs, particularly relevant are two articles that provide a detailed description of GBC copulas (2019) and a diachronic syntactic reconstruction of copularization in GBC (2020), respectively. I also co-edited a book (2019) as a tribute to nine scholars, pioneers of creole studies. Furthermore, I organized four scientific events, mainly focusing on - but not limited to- topics related to creole studies. I participated in a high number of national and international conferences, where I presented my work on copulas and copular clauses in GBC from different perspectives (syntactic, synchronic, and diachronic), on the syntax and semantics of bare nouns, and on grammaticalization(s) in GBC and the genetically related Upper Guinea creoles. I am also assessing the actual contribution of certain Mande and Atlantic languages (Niger-Congo) to GBC grammar, pioneering a new research direction with regard to this creole. Furthermore, I am also interested in questions related to language policy, language identity, and (spontaneous) orthographies in non-official languages such as GBC, as demonstrated in some presentations and in the organization of a workshop (2016) and of a conference panel (2020). I was invited as keynote speaker in events such as the First Conference on National Languages (Cacheu, Guinea-Bissau, May 2019) and the meeting ‘Portuguese-related Creoles: Linguistic Heritage’, organized by the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (Lisbon, June 2018). I will also be a keynote speaker at the conference New Issues in Language Contact Studies - NILCS 2020 (University of L'Aquila, May 2020). In the period 2013-2016, I was a member of the International Research Group on the Structure, Emergence and Evolution of Pidgin and Creole Languages (SEEPiCLa). Finally, I also collected professional experience outside the academia: in the period between my PhD and my present-day position as postdoctoral researcher at CLUL, I have worked as a teacher of German in refugee classes at the Volkshochschule Neukölln, in Berlin (2016-2017).
