Joana Azeredo is an Associate Professor with habilitation at the Department of Biological Engineering of the University of Minho and develops her research activity at the Centre of Biological Engineering, where she is a member of the direction board, leading the Biofilm Science and Technology research Group. She is also a member of the Executive Committee of the ESCMID Biofilm Group. Her current research focuses on interaction of bacteriophages (the viruses of bacteria) with biofilms and development of bacteriophage based biotechnological applications for pathogens detection and control. She and her team have developed pioneer studies on the characterization of the interaction of bacteriophages with biofilms and have isolated and sequenced several new bacteriophages. Her work was recognized by ICTV with the attribution of Azeredovirinae to a subfamily of viruses of microbes. Recently Joana Azeredo was awarded a very competitive research grant from La Caixa foundation, focused on the development synthetic viruses to combat infectious diseases. Joana Azeredo has supervised 18 PhD students and lead 2 European and 8 National and Regional projects. She has been collaborated with several Universities in Europe, EUA and Canada (eg. MIT, KULeuven, UGent, Wageningen University, Guelph University among others) in the scope of funded projects and PhD supervisions. She is regularly invited as a speaker in numerous international conferences related with bacteriophages and Biofilms (ECCMID, Eurobiofilms, VoM, ASM biofilms, FEMS,..). She also serves as international expert project reviewer for national and international funding agencies and as peer-reviewer for international scientific journals. She has extensive publishing and editorial experience, both as an author (+250 international peer reviewed papers), member of editorial boards and editor of thematic issues and books. Her work has received +9000 citations, she is in the top 2% of the most cited authors worldwide and her current h-index is 56

The importance of exopolymers in the adhesion of sphingomonas paucimobilis was established by studying the attachment to glass of three mutants with defective gellan production.   11. A new method for extraction of exopolymers from activated sludges. The exopolymeric matrix that surrounds the biomass greatly contributes to the efficiency of activated sludge systems. To study the composition of this matrix a preliminary extraction method is required.   12. Determination of cell number and size of a population of Pseudomonas fluorescens by image analysis. Microscopic observations of a population of Pseudomonas fluorescens were digitised by a frame grabber and an appropriate threshold was chosen to extract the objects from the background. Fully grown, single bacteria were normally distributed around two mean sizes. Two Gauss functions were fitted by least square analysis to these points and the enumeration of single cells was obtained from the area. 1997.   13. Polymeric supports for the adhesion of a consortium of autotrophic nitrifying bacteria. The nitrifying performance of the biofilm formed onto polymeric supports (high density polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinylchloride and polymethyl-methacrylate) was correlated with hydrophobicity and surface charge of both bacteria and support media.
