Artur João Gonçalves Bento have a Doctorate Degree in Chemical Engineering by Universidade de Lisboa-IST and a Degree in Applied Chemistry - Organic Chemistry by Universidade Nova de Lisboa-FCT. After my graduation, I start my academic career, between 2005 and 2008, establishing my expertise in the field of Organic Chemistry, especially in synthesis and chemical characterisation of small molecules (Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)). I decided to develop my PhD studies on the field of polymers and catalysis; a fast-growing field of research that requires deep knowhow on organic chemistry and materials sciences. In particular, I was preparing nanocomposites of polyethylene/silica mesoporous using polymerisation "in-situ". Specifically, I obtained expertise in synthesis and characterisation of polyolefins and mesoporous materials such as Electronic Microscopy (TEM & SEM), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermogravimetry Analysis (TGA), X-Ray Diffraction (SAXS & WAXS) and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA). In those years, I do two internships to improve my knowledge aboard Portugal. The first internship, in polymer characterisation (CSIC, Madrid, Spain), especially in X-ray diffraction techniques (SAXS and WAXS) to evaluate crystalline phase and size of the crystals, as well in DMA in order to infer about the mechanical performance of the polymers. The second internship, in catalysis where I learn more about how to anchor single-site catalyst on the surface of mesoporous materials. My first opportunity as a post-doc researcher between May 2014 to March 2016. I had the opportunity to continue developing my research profile in catalysis and in synthesis/characterisation of metal oxide nanoparticles. Since 2017 I had the opportunity to work as a post-doc researcher at ITQB NOVA in the scope of a project financed by the European Commission, FET-OPEN, entitled "FLIPT - Flow Induced Phase Transitions, a new low energy paradigm for polymer processing" during which I added value to my know-how and technical skills in polymers/chemistry more specifically a gained training in ionic liquids, biopolyester extraction and self-assembling, aquamelts, and several analytical techniques such as: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (solution and solid state), X-ray diffraction. Since, January of 2020, in the same team, I learned statistical NMR analyses in the scope of a collaborative-sponsored project between ITQB NOVA and SCION (New Zeeland). The main goal of the project is to develop a bark biorefinery process. Beyond the technical skills, I have greatly improved my soft skills regarding communication, networking, teamwork, critical thinking due to the multidisciplinary and international environment of the team and the project. Also, I have participated in international mobility actions, to University of Oxford and to University of Sheffield (to develop DSC and X-ray scattering skills, respectively). In the last years, I developed skills as co-supervision of master student/research fellow and in one collaboration project with the industry. In this project, I had the occasion to start my networking skill and growth my knowledge with outstanding people from industry and from different academic areas such as: polymer science, organic chemistry, NMR and zoology. To conclude, in my academic path, I had the chance to learn and developed may technical and soft skills by working in very different projects and teams. The opportunity to contact with specialists in different academic areas inside and outside from Portugal. Therefore, I feel that I am a researcher prepared to work on a multidisciplinary project and to be able to face the challenges in the near future.
