Ana Alexandre is a marine biologist with expertise in seagrass ecophysiology. She obtained a Degree in Marine Biology and Fisheries in 2001, a Master degree in Coastal and Marine Studies in 2004, and a PhD in Marine Sciences in 2011 at the University of Algarve, Portugal. Since then, she has been developing collaborative work with other European and non-European research teams to develop studies in diversified topics such as environmental monitoring and management, restoration of seagrass habitats, ecosystem metabolism, anthropogenic impacts (clam harvesting, nutrient inputs and ocean acidification), ecology of invasive macroalgae, sexual reproduction and nitrogen metabolism of seagrasses. She delivered innovative research on the importance of organic nitrogen in seagrass systems, the effects of ocean warming on the nutritional strategy of seagrasses, and explored the dynamics of nutrient competition between seagrasses and seaweeds. She is currently focused on the evaluation of emissions of greenhouse gases by vegetated coastal habitats and the impacts of invasive seaweeds in coastal areas. She published 28 scientific articles (first author in 65 %) and 1 book chapter, and coordinated as PI three projects on seagrass ecology. She is activey involved in student training as supervisor of MSc and PhD theses, and in science dissemination actions. She also contributes as peer reviewer of scientific articles. Other interests include travelling, history and puzzle solving.
