Ângela Maria de Marques Lopes e Ferreira Pinheiro

Ângela Maria de Marques Lopes e Ferreira Pinheiro. I am a Ph.D. student at the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica, Universidade Nova de Lisboa - ITQB NOVA, enrolled in the Molecular Biosciences (MolBioS) PhD program, starting in January 2020. During my academic journey, I earned a M.Sc. degree in Marine Sciences and Resources, specializing in Marine Biology and Ecology, at Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (2011) and a B.Sc. in Biology from the Faculty of Sciences (2009), both at University of Porto. My M.Sc. thesis project was developed in collaboration with Professor Anake Kijjoa in the field of natural products chemistry; special emphasis on the study of secondary metabolites derived from marine fungi associated to algae. My expertise in natural products discovery, analytical chemistry, and microbiology led me to win a position as a Research Fellow-BI at Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research - CIIMAR-UP (PTDC/MAR-BIO/2012, supervised by Dr. Pedro N. Leão, ERC grantee). In this role, I investigated the chemical and biological diversity of Portuguese marine cyanobacteria. From 2017 to 2019, I contributed to the Applied and Environmental Mycology group at ITQB NOVA as a Research Fellow-BI within the framework of the FCT project PTDC/AGR-TEC/1191/2014, entitled "Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents: A Platform to Boost Eucalyptus globulus and Quercus suber Cork Integrated Biorefineries," supervised by ERC-grantee Professor Cristina Silva Pereira. During this period, I honed various techniques such as HPLC, GC-MS, and NMR analysis, alongside bioactivity testing and large-scale production of biomass, augmenting my technical skills and soft skills. Currently, I am dedicated to my Ph.D. studies with an FCT scholarship under the project SFRH/BD/144593/2019, entitled "Dissecting Potential Roles of Resin Diterpene Derivatives Formed by Fungi Colonizing Pinus pinaster as Chemical Upholders Against Phytopathogens." This project is supervised by Professor Cristina Silva Pereira and Professor Carlos A. M. Afonso from Faculdade de Farmácia, Universidade de Lisboa - FFUL. During my PhD I have been endorsing my knowledge in microbiology, molecular biology, large-scale production of biomass and/ or compounds, analytical chemistry, and bioactivity testing. I am particularly enthusiastic about specializing in fungal ecology and environmental sciences, aiming to leverage scientific knowledge for the benefit of both humans and the environment. Over the course of my academic journey, I have actively participated in four projects and received two awards and/or honours. My publication record includes six peer-reviewed papers in top journals of the research fields, with four as the first author.
