Mariana Sardo got her Licenciatura degree in Physics and Chemistry for teaching (2005, top 5%) and a Ph.D. in Chemistry (2009) from the University of Aveiro. During her Ph.D. studies (FCT individual grant), she worked with Raman spectroscopy, studying weak intermolecular interactions in functional materials, pharmaceutics and inclusion compounds under the supervision of Prof. Paulo Ribeiro-Claro, including a 6-month stint in the University of Malaga/Spain. In 2010 FCT awarded a Post-doctoral fellowship to develop solid-state NMR studies in microcrystalline proteins in the group of Beat Meier - ETH, Zurich (14 months), followed by post-doctoral work in the group of Prof. João Rocha and Dr. Luís Mafra at CICECO - University of Aveiro, more focused on the applications of high-resolution solid-state NMR methods to small pharmaceutical molecules and inorganic/hybrid materials (6 years). She is currently an assistant researcher at CICECO - University of Aveiro where she continues to strengthen her expertise on the use of solid-state NMR for the characterisation of pharmaceutical systems and porous materials. In particular, the main topics of research involve the application of high-resolution multinuclear and multidimensional NMR spectroscopy towards: (i) the study of gas-solid interactions in modified porous solid sorbents with potential for gas sorption of gases labeled in key NMR-friendly isotopes; (ii) the study of packing interactions in small molecules, namely micro-crystalline proteins and pharmaceutical systems (powdered drugs, polymorphs, drug delivery systems) Combining high-resolution solid-state NMR methods, XRD and computational approaches to study crystal packing interactions in small molecules and materials - NMR crystallography; (iii) the study of drug-drug and drug-host interactions of molecular scaffolds as drug delivery systems; (iv) probing acid sites in micro and mesoporous systems relevant to heterogeneous catalysis (e.g., zeolites, silicas and inorganic-organic hybrids). So far she has published 45 papers in specialised journals, 3 book chapters, was invited to give 9 oral communications in national/international conferences, 9 workshops/lectures in PhD programmes and organised 6 scientific events. Up-to-date, she has co-supervised 27 research fellows (B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D. and Post-docs ), received 5 honours/awards and participated in 11 research projects as team member and 2 as a Principal Investigator. Research group: Dr. Luís Mafra, Prof. João Rocha, Dr. Paula Santos, Dr. Ildefonso Marín, Dr. Ricardo Vieira, Dr. Mirtha Lourenço, and currently supervising the work of 4 Ph.D. and 3 Master students.
