Carla Cunha is an Assistant Researcher at the Microenvironments for New Therapies Group at i3S. She has international expertise on biotechnology-derived biomaterials, stem cell manipulation in vitro and the combination of both for nerve and osteochondral tissue engineering in vivo. Her main goal as a researcher is to understand healthy vs. diseased tissue signaling, in order to achieve clinically implemented solutions. Carla Cunha has an h-index of 21, with over 2300 citations. She published 36 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, 30 of them in the area of Biomedical Engineering or in multidisciplinary areas and 13 were published as first author (Q1 or Q2). Carla Cunha obtained her PhD in Biology in 2007 at University of Porto, as a fellow of the prestigious GABBA PhD programme, with her project developed at San Raffaele Institute (Milan), where she demonstrated for the first time that a chronic overexpression of BDNF in the forebrain causes learning and memory deficits in mice. As a Post-Doc at the University of Milano-Bicocca (Milan), CCunha and co-workers were able to regenerate a 10-mm nerve transection in a rat sciatic nerve injury model, by using polymer electrospun tubes and, at the same time, engineered a neural prosthesis made of nanofibers and self-assembling peptides, achieving significant anatomical and physiological reconstruction in a rat spinal cord injury model. CCunha also developed an in vitro 3D hydrogel scaffold for the culture of neural stem cells in collaboration with the renowned Molecular Foundry (Berkeley). In 2010, CCunha achieved a Research Officer position at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research (Sydney), where she developed a new mouse model of olfactory neuroepithelium degeneration and neurogenesis. In 2012, by invitation of ISTEC-CNR (Faenza) and Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute (Bologna), CCunha returned to Italy to develop strategies for osteochondral tissue regeneration, using different biomaterials and stem cells. In 2013, she was granted a Post-Doc FCT fellowship, returning to Portugal to join INEB/i3S and in 2019 she won a position of Assistant Researcher.
