Björn Fredrik Johansson. Assistant Professor at the University of Minho. Expertise: Molecular Biology, Yeast Physiology, Bioinformatics and Metabolic Engineering. My current scientific interests revolve around metabolic engineering of baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae with heterologous fatty acid synthases. My group is one of two groups in the world who manged to functionally express a dissociated fatty acid biosynthesis system in S. cerevisiae. The overarching goal is to make use of the diverse metabolic capacity of bacteria and plants in the well characterized, industrially robust yeast strain. Efficient cell factories for specialized fatty acids in an industrially preferred microorganism would provide an alternative to non-sustainable sources such as krill, which negatively affects the oceanic food web. In the process, we created a successful metabolic pathway assembly protocol called "Yest Pathway Kit", published in the first article from a Portuguese laboratory in the highly regarded journal AMC Synthetic biology published by the American Chemical Society. I have successfully obtained FCT funding as PI for this line of research in the MycoFat and FatVal projects. A complementary interest is open science, specifically the creation and maintenance of complete and verifiable genetic design documents. I am the original creator of pydna, a Python package that enables simulation of cloning strategies as step-by-step executable documents. This software project is now maintained by a small international group of developers and has found users at MIT, Cal-Tech and UCSF. After being awarded a Fulbright scholarship, I spent five months at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California working on meta-genomics. This work resulted in one joint publication and two patents.
